So its our last day in Chang Mai now, just chilling out waiting until our train this evening. Its been so so much nicer here and chilled out compared to Bangkok. We've learnt the art of saying no, and doing stuff for ourselves. Our last guest house was a really cute little family run place, pretty small room and teeny bathroom, but it had air con, hot water, flushing toilet etc and for 350 bht a night for the two of us you can'y complain-2.50 each-bargain.
Didn't do much exciting the last few days...Saturday night was a big festival for the full moon of the 12th lunar month....Lat Krong or something (I'll find out and edit this at a later date) its a big festival and everyone in Chang Mai really gears up for it. We sat outside a bar and wandered down the street watching the big parade and all the floats and stuff, it was really nice to watch a get a feel of the culture and feel a part of it. Then everyone sets off the big lanterns into the sky to represent sending all their bad luck and stuff away and all. I set one off and it didn't go at first-noooo! But then threw it up again and away it floated. The sky looked pretty with all the lanterns, especially the ones with fireworks attatched to the bottoms of them! But horrible thought of all the litter when they;re burnt out and all the wire rings come down!! Doesn't seem like people in Thailand care too much about the litter, thats one of the main differences between here and Hong Konh. There is no rubbish anywhere in Hong Kong, theres bins around and everyone uses them. There are no bins here, just people littering all over the place its madness!
That night we also watched the Liverpool game and ate Pad Thai-perfect night! 3-0!! Woohoo! (We won't mention England and Euro 2008). Love pretty much all of the thai food, pad thai is lovely, and love the big thick flat rice noodles with chicken...mmmm. Got a bit sad tho when we saw some guy pulling a little baby elephant along by the ear down the pavement and asking people for money. It was only a little taller then me and we had to brush past it to get past...it was looking all sad :( then later we saw it with its mum and some guy on her back hitting her with a big stick. That's when I decided not to do elephent trekking here...I don't like the fact they have to walk round and round the same route each day, but it makes it worse if they're brought down to town at night too being beaten and getting scared :(
We wandered around the town the next day, booked our train tickets out of Chang Mai and general just looked at everything. Watched the fireworks at our guest house which were pretty good-but scary that the children are allowed to just let them off, they appear to have no rules about them here! We wandered to a chilled out bar on the road to the night market where we met some Oz guys that night. Was good just chilling and chatting and playing pool, watching some English guys setting off the loudest dodgiest fireworks outside which they'd bought from the night market-totally unlike ENglish fireworks!!! They're so so loud! It was pretty good to watch tho!
Went to a random club with the Oz Guys and just chatted to them about their travels etc while watching some thai bands playing was nice and chilled and then just walked back to our nice new little guest house-sooo much nicer. Yesterday we just really chilled out, wandered around town again, went to the night market at looked at all the stuff, just nice seeing all the little cultural things that make it so different to home! So now off to Ko Phagnan. Got almost 2 days of travel to get there tho...we're totally gonna stink :D
Miss everyone, got homesick for the first time yesterday-how sad am I!!! Happy birthday Ames and Lianne! Gutted I can't be there!
