So we arrived in Hong Kong at about 8pm or so HK time....so so so tired! Didn't really manage to sleep at all on the plane. I was fine though, I was impressed with actually ahving a choice of meals, as well as the amazing personal entertainment (own screen and you get to choose what to watch!). Its not too bad for me as I have teeny tiny legs and don't worry about leg room (unlike a certain someone who doesn't enjoy these flights/bus trips etc).
So we landed, and so so happy that so did our bags!! Traipsed outside, and it took us a good 15 minutes of wandering about before we finally found the bus stop for our bus to near our hotel...bus turns up, a kind guy swaps a note so we can pay the exact fare...on the bus for a bout 40/50 minutes and we stop at a stop and we see a sign saying Mui Wo-where we're meant to get off. We quickly jump off, bus drives away and we realise we're in the middle of no-where and had seen the bus sign for that stop saying it goes to Mui Wo. Joys. So we wander about...figure it can't be too far away so I change into comfy shoes and a taxi pulls up. We figure we haven't slept in about 28 hours, so a taxi is gonna be a lot better than a short walk....
Or a hike. We managed to get off the bus on what seems like the other side of Lantau. Luckily the taxi driver got us straight to our hotel, which is right on the beach, pretty big has a pool, free internet access etc. So pretty happy with that, got a comfy room with A/C, which we need seeing as when we landed at 8pm is was 28 degrees C. Loving it!
So yesterday (the 17th) we got a ferry over to Hong Kong island. We were worrying it was gonna be so expensive over here, and it totally isn't! The fare was $17 for a deluxe seat, i.e in the air conditioned cabin. That's just over a quid. Bargain. Looked around HK and all its designer shops which we couldn't afford, looked into M&S for a bit of homesickness, and then we just wandered around! Got onto the travelator to the mid levels which is so craxy....loads of travelators and escalators, probably about 20-30 or so in all which take you up to the mid levels, where you can look over all the high buildings. Never been in a city with sky scrapers before, so we were stupidly excited. We then wandered to the Zooilogical and Botnaical Gardens which were pretty nice...all free and there were loads of monkeys including a really cute baby gibbon...I could have watched him for hours! We then wandered back through town to the ferry, had some (not too nice) dinner and then got an early night...think the jetlag caught up with us.
And then today we went to Ngong Ping, where there's a little village which we thin kwas built purely for tourism, the big buddah (see picture...its pretty damn big) and a monastry. We walked up all the steps to the big Buddah...I got a pretty bad case of vertigo at the top and was rooted to the stop for a few minutes while I went all dizzy and tried to chill out. Took lots of photos, but one of the main reasons we're so happy we're on Lantau is the scenery. Its so different to HK island, its so unpopulated and more local....there's huge mountains like I haven't seen, and masses of hills and valleys all covered in forest. Loving it!
So after taking photos of Buddah and the girls with offerings and the amazing views (shame it was misty) we went back down, I got the shakes, and we looked at the monastry and bought a set of chopsticks for the both of us, again at a bargain price. Got to get an early night as gotta be at the airport for about 6am...joys....looking forward to Thailand for hopefully more sun, a lot more sea and beaches, and hopefully some nightlife and other fellow backpackers to make friends with!!!
Missing everyone back home, hope you're all ok, and keep in touch!!!
