Well, getting intoo the Czech Republic is easier then expected! And a lot more humurous as well. We had to change trains twice in Germany before we got to the border station, and then we had a 40 minute wait for our next train. So Liam walked from Germany into the Czech Republic, I was a bit more adventurous and skipped across the border and back again. Being at a border crossing, we thought we'd have to bust out the passports at some point, but oh no, they wanted absolutley no ID of us at all. We thought we were getting on a train, but a large bearded Czech man came and started saying things about Prague. We thought he wanted our passports but turn out there was no train and he wanted us to get on a bus. So we did. Travelled about 5 minutes to another station in the middle of nowhere, guessed that the train there was the one we wanted so we got on it. Good guessing on our part, cos it was the train to Prague, only 4 hours to travel then. Not a huge fan of Czech trains, 10 minutes into the journey, i could smell burning. Liam had a quick look out of the window while we were stoppingand it looked like the brakes were smoking. The conductor went out, had a quick look, and then we carried on. The further we went, the more smoke came off the brakes, and the more worried the conductor looked every time she went out to have a look. Something must have worked though, cos it did stop after a while! Train stations in Czech Republic, are all in the middle of nowhere, and pretty much consist of a shed next to the railway line. Classy!
The main source of entertainment on the train, was the ever reliable local drunk! He got on the train whilst having a row with his wife, they sat on opposite sides of the train, but still carried on rowing. When she came to check his ticket, there must have been a problem with it, cos he then started a row with the inspector, hands flying everywhere, and all very dramatic. In the end, he cracked open his bottle of vodka, drank it and talked to the poor boy sat opposite him, probably about how horrible women are or something. And he did start doing some sort of little dance thing as well, or he could of just been having a seizure i suppose.
We got into prague pretty late, and had been travelling for about 8 hours, so we found the hostel, and then the nearest supermarket. I then decided that i didn't want to cook, and let's face it, Liam wasn't going to, so we then went looking for a restaurant. The one we picked actually turned out to be a pretty classy restaurant, by Prague standards, and we ended up paying 454 Krowns for our meal and drinks. When you work it out though, thats about 15 quid! We like Prague! Went for a drink in a little bar round the corner from the hostel, beers about £1.20 a pint, and spirits are about £2 so we living it up a bit while we're here.
Spent most of Monday walking round trying to see if we could find the touristy things. Wasn't as hard as it seemed, and wasn't actually that far. We walked over the Charles Bridge (guess what....there doing restoration work on it, more scaffolding!) and then took a walk up to the castle. Didn't actaully go in the castle cos it's not free, but the church is so we had a wander round there. Walked back down towards the bridge and stopped off at a little kiosk selling Czech sausage and mulled wine. Really nice, but we still don't know what was in the sausage! Took a walk around and thought we might be getting lost, but suddenly found ourselves in front of a huge Tesco's that we'd walked past earlier. We went in, and it's not a real Tesco's at all. It's like a huge department store, with loads of different homeware stuff, and cosmetic counters. There's a whole floor upstairs with clothing, and a little section downstairs that's got alcohol. Not just any old bottles though, 4.5 litres of whisky which we worked out cost about £100! There's no way we'd fit it in either of our bags though! On the way back to the hostel, we got some sort of sugary dough bread twirly thing, really need to find out what all this food we keep eating is! Really nice though, there's a lot of meat and bread around, seems to be the main foodstuff round here. Monday night we went out, we were looking for an English bar we'd been told about, but couldn't find it, so gave up and went back to the bar near the hostel. Spent a good couple of hours in there drinking doubles, and still only spent about £16.
Tuesday we were gonna go out and look round the old town square and some other parts, but just ended up staying inside most of the day. No reason for it really,, just didn't get motivated to go out til about 4. So had a little walk round, tried to find the train station, failed because it turns out we were walking in completley the wrong direction! Having a quiet night cos we've got another whole day of travel on Wednesday, 7 hours to Krakow!
