Well, it was a looong train journey from Berne to Munich. Up quite early on Friday, had to get to the station early to get our InterRail passes sorted. We've realised that attempting to travel on not much savings and credit cards is not one of our finer ideas. So we've got these passes which mean we can travel anywhere in Europe for free! So making the most of the next month by going to a few different places, and then to Holland to get the ferry home. Not quite the year we imagined we'd be out here for, but we are gonna do it properly next time, and save enough so we don't have to worry. So we'll now be back at the end of November, so anyone who couldn't bear the thought of us being away for so long, no longer has to worry. For everyone else, sorry, but you're gonna have to start putting up with us again! Haha.
Anyway, Munich. Pretty boring train journey actually, the highlight of it was when Liam was peacefully dozing away, some guy tripped up and fell onto him. Woke him up with quite a shock i think. Got here quite late on Friday, and arrived at our hostel to find we'd been upgraded from the 40 bed dorm to the 6. For free! Winner. Dumped our stuff and walked round for a while, looking for a place to eat. We eventually settled on an all you can eat fajita place. Was really nice actually, although i'm fairly certain authentic mexican fajitas aren't supposed to have peas in them! Saturday we spent looking round Munich city. Lots of huge buildings, most of them seem to be churches. Quite a lot going on in the centre, loads of fresh fruit stalls around, and we came across a couple of groups of protestors, one wanting the release of some guy (we've never heard of him) and another raising awareness about organ harvesting in China. So nice, jolly groups of people! There's loads of take away places selling bratwurst and the like so we had one each for lunch, very nice actually, along with a pint of German beer (which is awesome). We treated ourselves to some strawberrys from one the fruit stalls as well. Bit more walking around and we found the shopping part of town. One thing we have noticed about Europe is that there are C&A's everywhere! We counted 4 in Munich alone! Retro!! There's a few musuems and the gallerys around but we didn't go into any today, mainly just walked around checking out the sights. Went a little takeaway place this evening, had some currywurst and pomme frites. And also got half a chicken for the train journey tomorrow. Had some entertainment with our meal in the form of the 4 drunk locals at the little bar, singing along to what we assumed was traditional Bavarian music and then some irate customer, who wasn't impressed when he found out he'd been charged for his bread roll! Highly amusing for us. Been a bit chilly today, even had to bust out my gloves, (thanks mum)! We've been really lucky with the weather so far, had a bit of rain in Berne but not enough to ruin anything, or even stop us from going out, hardcore Brits we are! Prague (where we're going next) is supposed to be a couple of degrees warmer than Munich as well, so hopefully, we'll stay lucky with the weather.
We had planned on going to the Dachau memorial site, but seeing as our routes now changed, we're probably gonna try and go to Auschwitz and Bernbau instead, cos we're stopping in Krakow and Warsaw. There is quite a lot about the "Third Reich", not allowed to say Nazi, and a lot of the tours offer up quite a lot of information about them and the war, which i was actually quite surprised, didn't think that they'd be quite so forthcoming with the information about that part of history.
So, the new plan now is Prague tomorrow (Sunday) for 3 days, then to Vienna, Krakow, Warsaw, Berlin, Cologne, Belgium and Amsterdam. Our rail tickets expire on 23 November, so as long as we're in the ferry port Hook of Holland by then, we'll have no problems getting back.
So, another long train journey to Prague, it's about 8 hours i think. But, it's MEGA cheap over there, and actually looks really interesting.
