I've had a good last two days. Yesterday I went to the Victorial Memorial and Park Street with the volunteers from Leeds. There were 5 of them but now there are only 4 as one of them as gone home. She was in India for the weekend. She said it was because her grandma was ill but others think this was an excuse. 2 of them are supposed to be volunteering in Darjeeling but they may end up staying here as there train keeps getting cancelled because of floods.
The Victoria memorial was beautiful and some of the paintings that the children had done were amazing. (A dog with no paw has just gone past the window-his leg is a stump which is quite sad to see but there are lots of humans struggling as well.) Had my first real sight of the beggars yesterday. They were quite good that blocking your path and some were quite persistent. The children beggars are hardest to deal with. One tried to remove my friends hairclip, another one followed us down the road for about 100m until we disappeared into Oxford bookshop. Also went on underground yesterday. Was a really nice underground station with flat screen tvs and plants. Not what you expect. The metro itself was jammed and hard to get off at stop. However, its probably only like London underground when its jammed. Got slightly lost when got off metro and went down the wrong road. Ended up walking into a settlement-bit embarassing but me and Leeds girls were together. I only realised we had gone wrong way when there were these low lying ropes going across and one touched my head. Thats when I thought I don't remember that on the way. Had Western food last two days for lunch which has been a nice treat. Yesterday went in a restaurant and had creamy chicken pasta and a coke. Wish they wouldn't give ice in drinks as keep forgetting to ask not to have it and then begin worrying about whether it is going to make me ill.Today I had Pizza in a Pizza Hut in a local shopping mall which was like being back at home almost. Had a small M&S, an accessorise, reebok etc. Was a lovely shopping mall.
It is Independence day in India so only went into work for an hour to watch the rising of the Indian flag and the childrens performance. They had microphones but sometimes they went a bit faulty. It was quite awkward as was playing musical chairs and moving from one place to another as different people kept telling me to go elsewhere. As I was volunteer staff said I could go and sit on the matt with children but then another staff member moved me into a chair. Quite awkward as felt I was taking up a seat. Then ended up in shopping mall. Quite a few times been jammed today as been with Leeds girls and co-ordinator in a car and then 5 of us in an auto plus the driver was a bit of a squeeze! Been on two buses and two autos as well as in a car today. I sat next to driver in auto which was less jammed than back but problem is he sits in middle and you are closer to the edge so feel a bit wary when go round corners etc.
Got to go now and cross back over roads. Decided that English drivers hardly hoot their horns and will be glad of some peace on the roads when get back!
