A nice pleasant drive to Winton today - we arrived mid-afternoon and had time to check out the 3 caravan parks. The first one had a pool, but the cow and lama in the small yard next to reception were smelly and the park was actually one of the most unkempt we've ever seen, so we moved onto the 2 in town, and they were both fine, but the one associated with the Tattersall's Hotel had nice green grassy patches, so that's what we picked.
We spent the afternoon around the town and visited many of the smaller attractions:
-
Waltzing Matilda Centre: The Jolly Swagman and Banjo Paterson's song are still pride of place out the front, but the centre burnt down in early 2015 and has yet to be rebuilt.
-
Opal Walk and Royal Open Air Theatre & Museum: lots of opals, and some very interesting memorabilia including old film reels, roller skates, movie posters, and pictures from the 1930's.
-
North Gregory Hotel: We stopped in here just for dad - it's apparently the site of the first public performance of 'Waltzing Matilda'.
-
Diamantina Heritage Truck and Machinery Museum: well, what an unusual thing to see about 50 cars/trucks/fire engines all restored to their glory in one place - they all actually drive as normal and many of them are large rigs that have towed all manner of things thousands of miles all over Australia. One of the owners took the trouble to open up the area showing the T-Model ford in its glory and explain many of the trucking stories - a great visit.
-
Qantas Airfield Commemorative Cairn: this was the first landing ground of Qantas - nothing really to see, as it's no longer an airstrip.
-
Musical Fence: an unusual collection of percussion type tin things such as tyre hub caps, 40 gallon drums; clothes line, etc make for some interesting tunes with pipes and sticks - the 'drum set' was a particular favourite!
-
Arno's Wall: a very eccentric man has built a very long and high wall made up of rock from Opalton, with lots of things set in it, including kitchen sink, toilet, all the parts of a holden, bike parts, war medals - whatever you can think of is in the wall!!
As it was about 35 degrees, we spent some time at the very pleasant local pool, then had a great dinner at the Tattersall's pub - Mum & Dad had a gigantic rib-eye each, while Eamon had a schnitzel and Renee had spaghetti marinara.
