We opted to stay here in Bourke for another night as the weather's a nice 33 degrees, and the park is so pleasant. After a nice slow start to the day, we drove out to the Fort Bourke Stockade via the Bourke Cemetery where the famous Eye Doctor, Professor Fred Hollows is buried. The fort was interesting - just a small wooden structure and the only one ever built by Australian explorers, it was created to protect the men from local Aboriginals.
Our next drive was out to the Historical Lock and Weir, the only one of its kind built on the Darling River (but it looked the same as others to us!). The river is very low now and the colour very light (compared to say, the Murray River which the Darling River joins way down at Wentworth near the NSW/Victoria border). The surrounding fields are extremely dry and it's hard to imagine the river ever flooding but it does every so often.
With the day getting hotter, it was great to come back to the park for a lovely afternoon swim and very late lunch.
There are only 2 other vans staying tonight, and 1 camper and a campervan, so it's very quiet again which is nice. We've hooked the car up ready for a quick getaway in the morning - heading across the border into Queensland.
