Nervous Turkey!
We couldn't wait to leave this morning, a hospital trip was definitely on the cards with Matt still not feeling himself. We thought a second opinion apart from Google was needed. With insurance documents in hand we got a boat to Krabi, checked our bags into a hotel and headed to the hospital. There was not a private hospital in Krabi so we bit the bullet and arrived at the general one. First impressions were not good when we weren't sure where to go and walked into A&E. Bodies laid on beds around us covered in blood, it was like a hospital you would see on a news link after a disaster. Char's words were 'If where we are meant to go looks like this we are leaving!' and 'I might need some sugar to sit about here all day.' It's clear to say she doesn't do hospitals well. Once we found the right desk, we were asked to fill in some forms while escorted by a lady who had taken a liking to us. While Matt gave his details, she held on to Char's arm and gave it a squeeze every few minutes as if offering support at this crucial time, he really wasn't that bad.
Within an hour we had seen a nurse, had blood tests and got a copy of the results, we were just waiting to see the GP. Because Google had been our best friend for the last few days, we were just about able to diagnose Dengue Fever ourselves from the blood test results showing low platelet count. After waiting for four hours to see the doctor the waiting room shut. That's right it closed. We didn't have a clue what was going on as the staff covered all the machines and the rest of the patients upped and left. After a few seconds of watching in amazement we asked s nurse what was going on. She explained that this clinic was now closed and we would have to go upstairs and wait at another one which opened half an hour later. We plodded on upstairs to find the same nurses and the same doctor just situated in a different room....we aren't sure on the point of this. When Matt's name was finally called we were delivered the news that he would need to be admitted to hospital for 2-3 days to be monitored. Thinking on her feet, Char quickly asked if it would be possible for us to transfer to Bangkok Phuket Hospital which was 3 hours away but where we knew standards were high. Luckily she said we could if we went tonight.
The next few hours were a blur, we bartered for a private taxi to take us to Phuket, we checked out of our hotel that we hadn't even used and we set off on our journey into the night.
Arriving in Phuket at 10.30pm, greeted by a friendly guy opening our taxi doors and loading our baggage onto a trolley we knew we were in the right place. By 11.30pm we were tucked up in a private room with ensure with Matt on a drip and receiving checks every 2 hours. We will wait to see what his assigned doctor says in the morning.
