At 7am, some obnoxious bells started going off. We had left the windows open in our room because it was a bit warm, so we were awoken by this bell song that made no sense at all. It was odd. After fully being woken up, we headed to St. Marks Square via boat bus. We figured out how to use our free passes, definitely saved us some money! Once there, we took some pictures of the square, and this huge Asian group walked straight through us as if we were invisible, with their audio guides and big sunhats and cameras. At the square area, there was a ton of pigeons, where people were feeding them and letting them fly and perch all over them. One older lady had about 10 on her. Crazy. Once we had finished marveling at the pigeons and people, we started walking down an alleyway, and saw an ATM. Since I have no cards now I needed some more money so Chad put his card in, and it basically got stuck. The machine didn't take it in, but it was too far in for us to get it out with our fingers. So, Chad went on a search to find some tweezers while I guarded the ATM. An older couple came by and were trying to help and were thinking that if you pushed it all the way in, that would work. But it didn't. The ATM basically ate the card and they peaced out. We started calling the bank numbers given trying to figure out what to do, but since it was Saturday, it was closed, and wouldn't be open till Monday. A few other people stopped by and got their cards stuck as well. One lady told us after she called her card company that ATM's like that could be a scam, where people come by and pull the card insert out and jack your cards. So Chad cancelled his card and then we ventured off to another area. We walked to the Academia area and then found a pizza place that was listed in Chads book as being good and cheap (our favorite). We sat and ate by the canal, filled up our water bottles in the weird water fountain things, and then we walked around a lot. There are SO many churches in Venice, and we weren't sure which ones were the important ones, so we kind of just wandered around and went into the occasional one.
Glass-making is a big deal in Venice, and is made in a part of Venice called Murano. I found a Murano glass shotglass that's pretty cool. The glass shops are everywhere, and have stuff like tiny little animals, clocks, jewelry, light fixtures, it's all pretty awesome!
Eventually, we found a restaurant that had calamari for not too much so we had a mid-afternoon snack and a glass of wine and people-watched for a bit. By that time, it was morning back in the states so Chad called the parents to explain our situation and we sat by a canal. Turns out the address right by us was 2012! So we had to take a whooping picture there, of course!
We walked around a bit more and ended back up in St. Marks square so we took a lift all the way to the top of the tower where you could see all of Venice. It was an awesome view and we saw two cruise ships going through Venice! All the people on the cruise ships were out by the edges looking out at Venice - wouldn't mind going on a cruise like that one day!
We still had a lot of time left, so we decided to get on one of the boat taxis and just see where it took us! We ended up being on there for 30 minutes and went all the way to the Murano island. It was definitely more of a local area and everything was closed at that point. We then headed back to our area and found a restaurant to eat at. The service was pretty awful, and we said yes to bread, thinking it was free, when in fact it was 21 euro...ended up being almost as much as both of our pasta dishes put together! It was pretty good though - bread and cheese and tomatoes. Our pasta was delicious as well - our first really good Italian meal! We debated about getting wine, but good thing we didn't or we wouldn't have had the cash to pay!
We walked around for a bit and then headed back to the hotel and passed out!
