After waking up and packing our stuff up, we headed over to Duomo to climb to the top. However, when we got there we discovered that they were doing construction till 1:00, which would be too late for us to go up before we had to get to the train station. We did get to see a view of the whole city from Piazzale Michelangelo, so it probably wouldnt have been much different. And we saved walking up four hundred something steps!
We walked over to Accademia but it was 11 euro to get in, and we just wanted to see the statue of David, anddd you can't take pictures inside. So we decided it wasn't worth it. We bought some postcards to send to people and went to McDonalds to write them, then to an Internet Cafe to look up addresses and kill time before we ate at a restaurant Chad had found online. Lunch was pretty tasty! Our wine was carbonated though...it was quite weird. We then found a mailbox to send our postcards and then grabbed some gelato from the same place as last night and then grabbed our bags and went to the train station. Turns out we were much closer to the station than we thought...if only we'd known when we arrived in Florence! Oops.
Our train was, once again, pretty nice for an Italian railway! I got seated next to a random girl, and Chad had an Asian next to him. Go figure. We arrived in Rome pretty quickly and walked down to the metro within the train station. It was a PACKED subway. Had to squeeze our way on with our huge bags. Our hostel had given us pretty decent directions, so we didn't get lost walking to the hostel, but it was a pretty long walk, or atleast seemed like it with our huge backpacks and the hot sun! Our hostel is in a pretty residential area and seems like we'll be using the metro a lot to get everywhere! Once we found the hostel, we checked in with the owner. We had read a lot of reviews about how nice the hostel owners were, and they definitely were! Our room was pretty spacious, and there were lockers, a ceiling fan (wow!), a kitchen, patio, computer to use, anddd wifi. We had a pretty good set-up!
After dropping off our stuff, we started to look around for a place to eat dinner. We found a restaurant right by our hostel, but it didn't open till 7:30. One thing we have to get used to for Italy and Spain is the meal times! They usually eat dinner much later and are closed during the afternoon until 7-8! We walked over to a supermercado to get a bottle of wine and kill time. Ended up finding quite the jug of wine that we're saving for later in Rome. We dropped it off and went back to the restaurant once it was late enough. Turns out, it's a set menu. You get a drink, bread, 5 antipasti, pizza, and then dessert, for 13 euro. The antipasti was an interesting mix; we weren't quite sure what everything was but we tried it all! A couple of things were pretty tasty, and others not so much. My pizza was pretty nasty though, had some weird cheese on it that I was not a very big fan of! We kind of had to watch the people around us to figure out the correct etiquette, and the restaurant really started to fill up around 9pm. It's crazy how late they eat here!
We then figured out that Chad's credit card wasn't working...pretty sure they cancelled it, even though he told them specifically to not cancel his credit card! We went back to the hostel and planned out the next day, and then passed out!
