We woke up, purposefully being a little noisy for our Asian roommates, and then enjoyed our free breakfast for the last time. We then walked down to the bus stop and used our free transportation card to make it to the train station. We had to wait for a bit for our train, but eventually it arrived. It seemed as though we didn't have specific seats or a certain coach, so we got on at the closest door...turns out we accidentally sat in first class. After being reprimanded by the ticket lady, we made our way back to second class, basically in time for us to get off our train in Spiez. We had about 30 minutes to kill before our next train so we wandered around for a bit and then headed back to the correct station. All of a sudden, these rail station workers began talking to customers so we went over and found out our train was cancelled...couldn't understand the guy when he told us why. We had to wait another hour for the next one to come, but everyone received a free drink at the restaurant at the train station so we headed over there and got some free cappuccino's while waiting. We had to squeeze onto the next train and our neighbor began talking to us; they were from America and a girl from Italy (or France, not sure which) was sitting next to them, basically translating any announcement. At the next station, we had another hour to wait so we just sat and chilled right by the stop with our bags till it arrived. The girl from earlier seeked us out and made sure we were getting on the right train, and then found us seats on board. We were amazed at how nice she was! Our next train wasn't too long, and we arrived in the Milan station. There was about a 30 minute break till the next train so we grabbed some over-priced Burger King for lunch and then headed to the train. A man gave us seats to sit in, but when we got to those seats, he had already given them to someone else. We tried to sit in some random open ones, but someone claimed them as well. Turns out the train was overbooked with all of us coming from the cancelled train and there weren't enough seats, so we had to sit in one of the walkways by the door and girls bathroom. Good times. It wasn't too terrible until every girl on the train decided they needed to go pee so I had to get up and move for them every time they came over. I tried to take some random empty seats two different times, but got kicked out, so we stuck to our bathroom area. Eventually we were able to find some seats and didn't get kicked out of them for the last 45 minutes of the trip, yay for actual seats!
Right when we arrived in Venice, this couple approached us outside the train station. They were leaving Venice and asked if we wanted their free transportation passes! Hell yeah! I don't know why they singled us out but I'm glad they did because we saved some money! Our hotel was pretty close to the station and didn't take us long to get there. We checked in and dropped off our bags. First time we have a room to ourselves, a weird concept now!
We left the hotel and walked around for a while, checking out the canals and shops. Eventually we started looking for "hole-in-the-wall" places for dinner. We'd heard that the "tourist" menu tended to be a bit of a rip-off so we looked for more local places. We ended up finding a restaurant that wasn't too pricey and got some Italian pasta, turned out to not meet our expectations because we think that restaurant was known more for its pizza, since everyone else had pizza. While we were sitting there, atleast 20 different people stopped by this poster on a building. It ended up being a poster for movies, and we're guessing maybe they're not played that often, or that was the only theater in town, because so many people stopped and stared at it. Quite entertaining. After paying, we walked back towards our hostel and got some gelato - both got the Cookie flavor. So yummy! It was only 1 Euro for a single scoop, which was plenty. I got a two scoop because we weren't sure how much that would end up being, but it was more than enough! Hopefully we can try a lot of flavors while in Italy! We ate our gelato by a bridge and watched the gondolas go by, and then went to our hotel and passed out!
