When we woke up Sunday morning, we got ready and headed to Dachau (Dawkhow), the concentration camp near Munich. Once we were out there, we grabbed a map of the area and began walking around by ourselves. Whenever we were in line to get a map, the guy standing behind us recognized Chad's aTm tag on his backpack and asked if we were Aggies. When we said yes, he told us he was a SMU graduate and that they kick our ass every year and will this year as well...pretty sure we beat them this last football season, the guy was a p**** We walked around and saw the bunker rooms, the crematorium, the museum part, where they tortured prisoners, and all other parts. It was really interesting and sad to think how many lives were lost right on that ground. We watched a short 20 minute movie that talked about everything and then we headed back into town. We'd heard there was interesting things to see and good restaurants in Marienplatz so we headed there and found a restaurant right in the middle of the square. Our waitor was dressed up in a German outfit and we found it fitting to order sausage for lunch, as well as a German beer, of course. After lunch, we took the subway to the Englisher Garden. We got kind of confused on which way to go but we heard this group of older Americans saying they were heading to the Beergarten in the Englisher garden so we began to follow them - our go-to when we have no idea what way to go. We listened for the music and eventually found our way where the Chinese tower is and hundreds of picnic tables. We learned later that Beergarten is the second largest in Munich. Since its the thing to do in Germany, we got a huge pretzel and a liter of beer. Both were delicious. Matthias came and met us at the Beergarten and then led us to where the surfing spot is. It's this area where waves are created and expert surfers will jump in and surf for a few minutes and then the next person will go. It's pretty awesome to watch; I could sit there for hours just watching the surfers!
Matthias then walked us to Haufbrahaus which is the oldest beer in Germany and is a famous Beergarten worldwide. It's pretty huge and lots of seating, with the traditional Bavarian band playing inside. We sat down at a random table (you seat yourself) and none other than the SMU ass with his son sit down at the table with us (they are very large long picnic tables so multiple parties will sit together at one table). I ordered a roast chicken with potato salad that was soooo good and Chad and Ashton got pot roast and then we all split a bread basket. We ordered liters of beer again, but got two Radlers instead that is a mix of beer and lemonade- it was really good! Then out of the blue, SMU jerk says he's paying for our beers. Earlier on in the dinner he asked again if we were from A&M because he recognized us from earlier, and asked what we were doing with our lives now. Once again repeated that he was an SMU grad, and Chad goes "Congratulations." When we thanked him for the beers, he goes "I remember when I had no money" and we had to hold back any response.
After dinner, we went back to Matthias for a nap before we went out to a bar. However, our two hour nap turned into an 11 hour slumber. We never woke back up and slept all the way till the morning. I think our 2 weeks of backpacking is hitting us!
