We had to wake up really early today to begin our 4 hour journey to Murchison Falls National Park. Despite the long journey, we were thrilled to see that our minibus had large comfy seats (which were actually facing the way the vehicle was going - yippee!) On the way we caught our first sight of animals - baboons! When we arrived we ate our lunch at the camp and were shown to our cabins, then set off for chimp tracking. Our guide Joshua led us into the forest, and after 2 hours trekking through the beautiful but dense forest (with only a branch to make a path) - plus lots of pauses to listen for chimp calls and spot their faeces - we finally found a mother chimp with her 2 children! Although they were high up in the trees and quite hard to see at first it was so exciting to see them, and after getting used to focusing our binoculars we got a great view. We watched them eating, and were lucky enough to be standing right underneath them whilst they urinated (luckily we avoided the spray!) It was amazing but we needed to leave before nightfall in the rainforest, so we started walking back. It took exactly 50 minutes (exactly as Joshua had predicted!). We saw some amazing sights in the rainforest, including a 200 year old mahogany tree which was absolutely enormous. Joshua also had to use a branch to cut through some of the undergrowth which was very impressive!
We arrived back at the lodge and thankfully there was some hot water for our showers. After having a delicious dinner we're now heading off for a very early night (it's 8pm…) in preparation for our 4.30am wake up call tomorrow!
