Iguazu Falls... No words will do it justice!
After Colonia we ended up back in Buenos Aires for a night in order to organise the next part of our trip. Uruguay people are lovely and friendly but when it comes to helping organise travel they are only prepared to get you to Buenos Aires!!! So we agreed in the end just to be shipped back to the big city and to continue our trip from there.
After lengthy discussions with the travel agent in the Hostel we decided to boycott any more cities and to head straight for Iguazu and boy are we glad we listened!!! It was a long 18 hour trip from Buenos Aires to Puerto Iguazu but we were so excited when we jumped off the coach to see sunshine that the trip suddenly felt worth it!!!
We stayed in Puerto Iguazu, which is not the most amazing place in the world but the hostel was filled with fun people and it turned out to be a blast... we met a bunch of American guys and an Kiwi over dinner and basically spent the night chatting to them and drinking beer. They had come from the north so were able to give us some top tips on our later destinations. The evening was fun and in true Hadley style, not doing anything by half, Aaron ended up in the swimming pool at 2am! Not further comment needed ;)
We took the full day trip to the Argenitian side of the falls the next day (hangovers included). We managed to get through the entire morning before the heavens opened and it chucked it down with rain... for the REST of the day! And as Hadleys, accepting that rain was inevitable, we just put on the good old rain macs and got on with taking the walks to see the different view points. Despite the rain and the haze the falls were magnificent. Breathtaking in fact. There was even a moment when Aaron was lost for words... which in turn left me lost for words :) You will be able to see by the ludicrous amount of photos that were taken just how amazing the falls were. Suspect theyll be slightly less impressive and more envy-generating to those of you sitting at work reading this and looking at the photos (which follow once I find a computer that will finally let me download my god damn mountain of photos that are piling up!).
Not content with seeing the falls from afar in the pouring rain, we jumped in a boat to get up close and personal...and we really did get up close! Aboslutely soaked through thanks to the "shower" component of the ride. And thanks also to the mad bunch of Argentinian teenagers who thought it would be fun to go through the falls over and over again so kindly asked the driver to repeat the "shower" part several times until the driver finally got bored and took us down what they classed as "rapids" and what we classed as "just a river". This would have been absolutely amazing in the summer sun but given that it was already raining and we were freezing, it seemed to go on for a long long time. But then, they dropped us off on the side of the river and put us all in an open top jeep to give us a little tour through the rainforest. So having just completely soaked us, they basically offered us the hair dryer au natural....but hey, the wind swept look is so traveller this year we were right up there with the cool kids ;) I have to say, I have never been so excited to take a hot shower than when we arrived back at the hostel...its the little things in life!
The following day we went to visit the falls from the Brazilian side. Still impressive but not quite as exciting as you are slightly further away from them. The biggest selling point of this side is that you get the panoramic view which you cant get from the Argentinian side. They really are phenomenal. Up close and from a distance. After the morning at the falls we went to have a buffet lunch on the way back. The food was tasty and Aaron definitely took advantage of the all-you-can-eat menu, as Im sure you can imagine.
We left Iguazu that evening on a night bus to Tucuman... only a 22 hour bus ride. Nice.
