Day 13.
Up early for the day on the Glacier. The pictures say it all really. It was an amazing experience and weird to think that I was actually standing on a huge bit of ice. The walk there was pretty scary as we had to hold on to a chain along narrow sections of the mountain and avoid the 150m sheer down on the other side (looking down was very scary). On the glacier itself the guide cut paths in the ice which took us toward the upper tier. The higher we got the more jagged the ice hills, which made the walk more dangerous. Luckily aside from a few slips, we did ok and nobody fell down a crevasse. As we were a fairly young group, we moved pretty quick and managed to get a solid 4 hours on the glacier and reach some of the lesser seen areas.
The Fox glacier is one of the few in the world that come so low down the mountain (500m above sea level) so it wasn’t actually THAT cold considering. The geek in me found it really interesting as I did glaciers in A-level geography and was surprised at how much info I could recall. The walk was pretty shattering and it has been 2 days of hardcore trekking here in Fox. I have noticed I have started to lose weight, but I don’t think its lack of food soo much, just quite a lot of walking.
On a side note, 2 girls in our glacier tour group had a rented car, and with a little careful questioning and subtle hinting we have managed to grab a lift with them to Lake ??? which is near to Queenstown and a good 4 hours in the right direction. We will stop off there as we have herd the lake is pretty nice and our accommodation will be paid for by the saved bus fair….we’re getting pretty sneaky at this catching a lift lark!
