Day 8.Caught up with a bit of kip then decided we had to make the most of our time here. The hostel is a right dump and stink. The people in it are like skag addicts because there were people were passed out all over the TV lounge and guys in our room were sleeping fully clothed. I went to the loo but it had sick all round it and when I moved to another someone came running in and chundered next to me the other side! A messy place!First stop was the Melbourne Cricket Ground and Commonwealth games complex. We went on a tour of the MCG and it was amazing. I love going to new stadiums anyway, but this one has a real special feel to it, and its easily the biggest I?ve been in (110,000 capacity). The new Wembley has a lot to do to beat this one! Unfortunately the next event being played there is a huge Aussie rules derby, but we wont be here for the weekend. We took a tram around the city and got the general feel for the place before heading back for the hostels quiz night. There were prizes involved so we joined up with 2 American girls to enhance our chances. 1st prize was a trip around the Great Ocean Road, 2nd - 2 jugs of beer, 3rd - bottle of ?champers?/fizzy cider. We ended up coming 2nd by 2 points, which was really annoying.. The great ocean road goes in the other direction but if its free we would have gone for sure! After the quiz we bunked the tram to St.Kila, a posh suburb for cheap drinks at a club. The place was a dive and the larger tasted like fart water. So we came home early-ish.Day 9We were pretty annoyed because we want to go on the Neighbours tour, but its apparently Australia?s most popular tour and books up weeks in advance. We?re not having much luck. Instead we went to Brunswick Street, which is full of weird/funky cafés and shops , similar to Camden Market. After this Duncs went to Parliament House, whilst I went to the Crown Casino. The Casino holds the Aussie millions, which is one of the biggest poker tournaments in the world, so I had to play on those tables. I wont go into geeky detail but I won a nice $65 which pays for a few nights accom and I really enjoyed it.The evening was a strange one. We went to the bar next to the hostel for a comedy night. All through Aprl Melbourne hosts a comedy festival and this event was a premlim where comedians drum up a bit of interest in their shows. In short it was the worst one I?ve ever been to and the jokes were old and s***. At the interval though I went to the loo and bumped into the guy that compares at Folkestones monthly comedy night. We had a little chat and he offered me free tickets for the whole festival!! Again we cant go because we are off up the coast at 6am tomorrow. Small world, but it gets smaller???..Less than 30mins after this I see a familiar face walk into the bar and it?s a guy called James who went to my uni and worked with me on placement at Meetings Fare. I knew he was in Australia but didn?t know where - he thought I was in Asia, but didnt know where! So now that?s Paul Kenwood from my class at school and James from work!We had a few pints and spent the rest of the night with the people he lives with who are really cool, so it was a good night, despite the quality of comedy - For the record the compare from Folkestone didn?t perform and he is really good . His reserve, who has been to Fstone a few times, actually headlined the night and was the best by far. I didn?t know we had such great talent back home!Day 10At 6am we got the bus all the way to Byron Bay - a 27hour journey! We changed coaches in Sydney at 8pm and had an hours break, apart from that it was hardcore coaching . We got to Byron at about 1pm the following day. Not much to report for obvious reasons, although I felt really weird because I only managed 3hrs sleep the whole journey and completely lost my sense of what time/day it was.
