Day 13
We had to leave the hostel at 10 so it was an early rise yet again. To cure the hangover we got body boards from the hostel and went to the beach as our bus wasn?t until 3.The waves are pretty big, so it was quality being on the board. I?m getting pretty decent now and can catch waves, stay on and do turns.
The beach at Byron is amazing and a saying we heard people say in NZ?.. ?the nearer you go to the beach, the prettier the women? is certainly proving to be true!
We caught the bus up to Surfers Paradise in the afternoon and arranged to meet Wes there because he travels with another bus company with different leaving times. The ride up the coast was excellent with beach views for a fair bit of the 4 hour journey. Surfers Paradise surprised me because I expected a small surfer town, similar to Byron, but it had massive apartment blocks and resembled Benidorm. Most of the apartment blocks looked pretty modern though, so the skyline is much nicer than Benidorm.
After settling in the hotel and having a look around the main street we met Wes at his hostel and agreed to go on an hostel organized pub crawl with people there. Surfers is meant to have an amazing nightlife at weekends, but as it was midweek, the club was pretty empty and we just played pool, watched cricket/football and chatted with our 2 irish roomates who we bumped into there.
Day 14
Today was an absolute disaster! We got up fairly late but planned to go to the Wet and Wild waterpark. We got our tickets at 12ish from the hostel but they failed to tell us the bus there stopped running at 11.30. Undeterred we attempted to get a local bus there instead. 35mins into the journey we asked the driver how far we were and he replied ?another 45mins!?. This would be far too late so we gave up got off and tried to catch a bus back to Surfers.
Stuck in the middle of nowhere, after 30mins a bus came, but it wasn?t the one we wanted. However, as we spoke the driver of the bus we didn?t want, the one we did want drove past. We cursed our luck and 5 minutes later decided to walk on to the next bus stop as it was in a more built up area??..after taking 20 paces away from the bus stop, another one of our buses drove straight past! b*****.
We eventually got back to Surfers at 4pm, and seeing as though we were in swimming gear we went to the beach. The waves at Surfers were even bigger than Byron Bay, and the beach in general was much better. Unfortunately I didn?t have a body board, so we had to try and swim with the massive waves in the hope they would ?pick us up? and speed us to the beach - a pretty decent game if you can do it properly.
After this we got one of my favourite things - a KFC bargain bucket - on the seafront as well!Due to the mount up of late nights and drink, we decided to go for a quiet one and go bowling. However, when we got back to the hostel me and duncs ended up sitting outside chatting till 3 anyways, so still no major rest.
