After deliberating about going to Stewart Island I bit the bullet and booked accomm and the ferry. So glad I did. The expense was totally worth it!
I timed it with some of the best weather I've had since I arrived and it showed off Stewart to its fullest.
Lots of walks and wildlife to see and enjoy and some of the prettiest, deserted beaches you could hope to find.
A highlight was definitely the monring I spent on Ulva Island which is entirely a nature reserve and one of the few places you may be lucky enough to see a Kiwi during the day! I was lucky! Absolutley fantastic to see these rare, funny looking birds quite at ease and poking around the ground looking for food. Another Scot I met said one actually came so close as to peck at his girlfriends trainers!
I also had a little blue penguin come less than a metre from me and saw another swimming around near the ferry to Ulva. Wildlife spotting was great, especially if you like birds.
