November 4th, 2010 --- Whitsundays to Hervey Bay
This morning was another early start, it seems we are quickly becoming accustomed to early mornings and life on the water! We awoke at 6:30am in Blue Pearl Bay where we anchored overnight.By 7am we had eaten breakfast and jumped into our sexy stinger suits in search of Nemo and friends.Well, actually "Elvis" at this snorkel site.Elvis is a massive fish (forgive me I forget the species) that inhabits this portion of the reef.He is about the size of a baby dolphin and is known by the crew as the "Labrador of the sea" for his friendly and curious nature. He is the only male in the area and courts with about six females (2 of which I saw). When Elvis dies, the largest female will change sex and continue on Elvis's legacy!Pretty fascinating species eh?We finished our last snorkel in the Whitsundays and clambered aboard to pack all our belongings and grab some lunch as we sailed back to the harbour in Airlie Beach.
We disembarked the boat around noon and didn't need to catch our Greyhound bus until 7pm, so we utilized the spare time to email home and wander through the local shops. There's not too much going on in the town of Airlie Beach. It's pretty much one street that is about 1km long filled with shops and travel agencies and a lagoon for swimming in.The travel agency that we booked our boat trip through was able to store our luggage for us while we shopped and wandered around town.We found a good happy hour special --- $8 jugs of beer from 4-8pm!So Allie and I grabbed a jug before picking up our stored luggage and heading to the bus.We decided to stop at the grocery store to pick up some snacks for the road.Allie paid and then we proceeded to walk out without our purchases!!!!Haha!Wow!We only had 2 glasses each, so we couldn't even blame this one on the alcohol!Luckily, Allie realized not even a minute after leaving, so we shamelessly walked back in and asked for our purchases!
The overnight bus from Airlie to Hervey Bay wasn't that bad considering it was 12 hours!I slept on and off throughout the ride, trying to find a comfy sleeping position on a jam-packed bus!
