November 3rd, 2010 --- Whitsunday Sailing (Day 2)
Today we were awoken by our awesome first mat, Steve, belting out "Sex Bomb" at the top of his lungs! What a song to wake up to at 6am!We were quickly scooted upstairs for brekky because we were due to arrive at our first stop, Whitehaven Beach. We travelled through Tongue Bay to reach Whitehaven Beach, which has been voted as the 2nd best beach in the world (after one in the Caribbean). The beach is 98.9% Silica giving it its gorgeous white colour and fine texture. Here we did a bit of a bush walk to get a great view from the lookout point. We then ventured onto the gorgeous beach for some R & R.The weather was a bit iffy, overcast skies threatening to rain.Allie still tried to soak up some sun, while I paddled around in the turquoise water in search of stingrays. After about an hour we hiked back to the boat and grabbed a sandwich and salad lunch.
After lunch, we explored a snorkel site at Luncheon Bay.We grabbed our stinger suits (it's jellyfish season and no one needs a nasty sting!), snorkel and mask and jumped aboard a smaller "tinny" that transferred us to the coral. The coral was okay, but nowhere near as spectacular as it was further north in Cairns. The reef is bigger and brighter the further north you get.We did get to see a few different species of fish that we didn't see in Cairns, so it was all-good!Halfway through our snorkel, it decided to downpour! Not exactly what you wish for on a sailing trip!Allie and I were already wet, so we figured there would be no harm in staying in the water.Unfortunately, our beach bags and towels took the brunt of the storm; let's just say that that was the end of clean and dry towels for the next few days!As much as we tried to dry them in our tiny cabins on board, they still managed to stay sopping wet! When we returned to the boat after snorkeling, they had pulled out the slide that runs off the side of the boat, so we played on that and jumped off the top deck.AWESOME!!!
The rain didn't hold off for the evening, so instead of having a party on the top deck, we were forced to stay down below in the saloon and have a quieter evening of cards and board games.
