Monday we had breakfast then took a minivan to Kanchanburi which was about a 2 and a half hour drive. We arrived at our very luxurious hotel right on the River Kwai with a view of the bridge. We dumped our bags then took a stroll along to the bridge for a look, the bridge was constructed in WW2 and is part of the Death Railway, it felt like there was no way it could hold a train, however it still does. We relaxed for the rest of the day before heading out for dinner at a restaurant on the water, the river is full of fish and the mums were very entertained at flinging any left over food into the river and watching the fish go wild! After dinner we headed back to our hotel to play games, jungle speed and bonjour misseaur which had everyone crying with laughter! Tao, a waitress in the restaurant loved watching us play and understanding the rules.
Tuesday we had breakfast then headed off to HellFire Pass, another historical section of Death Railway. Death Railway was built in WW2, the Japanese used an estimated 180,000 Asian civilian labourers and 60,000 allied prisoners of war to construct 250 miles of railway between Thailand and Burma to supply it's forces, of these it is estimated that 90,000 Asian labourers and 12,700 allied prisoners died during the construction with 6 out of the 12 thousand prisoners thought to have been British. Hellfire Pass became a well known section of the railway for its brutality, this section of the railway was constructed along the Tenasserim Hills making it the largest rock cutting section, some sections of the rock had been cut down to 10 metres with only drills used, they were made to work 18 hours a day and were badly beaten by the Japanese guards. Hellfire Pass got its name because the sight of prisoners labouring at night by torchlight was said to resemble a scene from Hell. We got to walk the pass which was very solem, there were still some sleepers on the ground and you could see drill marks in the rocks, the surrounding hills were stunning and it was said that the views and jungle are what kept a lot of prisoners going. When we got back Ben and Dads dipped in the pool before we all got ready for dinner, we headed along to another restaurant on the river and to much of our mothers disappointment there was no fish at this one! We headed back to play games and this time Tao joined in with us which she loved!
Wednesday we had breakfast and packed our bags before leaving to head to Bangkok for 1 night via Erawan Falls. Erawan Falls is a 7 tiered waterfall with each level having a natural pool to dip in containing to some people's like and dislikes huge fish that nibble your skin! We walked all the way to the 7th tier and all had a dip or a go standing under the fall and we saw monkeys and a snake. We didn't get back to Bangkok until 19:30 so quickly freshened up before heading out for dinner back to the first Thai restaurant we had visited as we liked the food there, after dinner we headed to bed as we were so tired and tomorrow would travel to Koh Samet.
