Sunday, we met for breakfast at 6:30 and set off for the airport at 7:00. Liam and Sam checked in and we said our goodbyes, we, Laura, Ben and Chris, went on the search for a flight to Delhi. We managed to board a flight at 9:50 and be on our quick 2 hour flight to Delhi, we played musical chairs on the plane as we struggled to find seats that had screens working and we ate a good old curry breakfast! When we landed in Delhi it was hot hot hot, close to 40°c, we took a taxi to our hostel and spent the rest of the afternoon chilling, watching movies and obviously eating more curry!
Monday we had a nice lie in, we found a funny apology note in our room from a man who annoyingly came in our room and turnt the light on to pack his bag and have a shower at 00:30, some people are so inconsiderate. We ate breakfast then headed out to the cinema, our rickshaw driver was very kind and stopped off at the tourist office on route for us to get a map. We watched 'The Avengers' then went back to the hostel to chill. For tea we went to a restaurant down the road from our hostel, we invited a guy from our room, peter, and of course we ate curry.
Tuesday we had another nice lie in followed by breakfast, we were a bit slow on breakfast as we had all been unwell. Laura wasn't feeling up for going out so remained in the hostel for the majority of the day. Ben and Chris went out to find a good company that would rent us bikes to travel the Rajasthan part of our India trip, they came back all excited for our adventure and we started to plan routes which would pass towns we wanted to visit. We chilled for the rest of the day.
Wednesday we of course had a lie in! Ben and Chris ate breakfast but Laura still poorly so forced on a diet of dry biscuits for the day and restricted to the hostel, starting to get cabin fever! Ben and Chris continued the search for a bike company which was good quality and cheap, they found one they were pleased with and settled some agreements with them. When they got back we decided to head to Connaught Place to buy some maps in the shops and for food so we went to McDonald's, figured it was a safe option for our bellies. When we got back to the hostel we started drawing routes on the maps and chilled for the rest of the day.
Thursday we had a very long lie in and another lazy day, we missed breakfast at the hostel so found a cafe for lunch and ate ginormous sandwiches. After, we chilled in the hostel, watched movies and read books until bedtime.
Friday, we woke from the most awful nights sleep, a man moved into our room at midnight and turnt the light on waking us all up, then had a shower. At 1:30am another man moved into our room and turnt the light on waking us all up, then had the cheek to ask Ben if he could sit on his bed and charge his phone! Obviously Ben said no so he sat on the floor in between our beds and kept shining the light in our faces so Laura asked him to move, he sat on his own bed and started having a phone call so Laura gave him a pretty evil glare and then he had the cheek the ask Chris if he could sit on his bed and charge his phone, when Chris said no he grabbed his bags and left, this all happened over a hour so by time we managed to get back to sleep it was 2:40am...not happy. We ate breakfast then the boys went off all excited like it was Christmas Day to collect their motorbikes. Matt arrived at 16:00 so we let him settle in and freshen up, told him some travel stories and our plans then went to Cannought Place for a wonder and to find a bar for some drinks, after we went back to the buffet we ate at the other day for Matt to have his first proper Indian curry.
Saturday, the boys got up super early to have a practice on the bikes whilst the roads we quiet, they ate breakfast then were joined by Laura at 9:00 to go adventuring. We took a rickshaw to Red Fort, built in 1648 out of red sandstone, hence it's name, it was the residence, ceremonial and political centre of Mughal government and the setting for events critically impacting the region for nearly 200 years. We didn't go in the fort as tourist had to pay and there are lots of other forts across India which we read are better, so we just took some photos from outside then walked to Chandni Chowk market which was disappointing as it was not like a market at all, more of a busy road of local shops. We walked to Jama Masjid a massive Mosque which was a pretty impressive building but again we did not pay to go in. We took a rickshaw to India Gate, a 42 m high Arc-de-Triomphe like archway which commemorates the 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives fighting for the British Army during the World War I.
Then we went to the Museum which had Indian history covering the last 5000 years, exhibits include rare relics from the Harappan Civilisation, Buddha's 4th to 5th century BC effects, antiquities from the Silk Route, exquisite miniature paintings, woodcarvings, textiles, statues, musical instruments, and an armoury with gruesomely practical weapons, it was a little boring but a good place to escape the heat. We went back to the hostel to chill and pack then went for dinner at Connaught Place, it was an early night as tomorrow we set off early for Agra.
