Gday people!
Hope all is well. Maria hope you had a good birthday, wish we were there but our adventures needed us here! Hope you and Jen have a good night out and have a drink for me!
So! We left Sydney on Monday, getting the train to the airport for our 1300 hour flight to Brissy (Brisbane). Booked our hostel from the airport and hopped on the shuttle train-easy! Our hostel is called Bunk, chosen as the leaflet said, 'more like a hotel than a hostel'! Had a four bedded dorm with one miserable german bloke in there. It was fine though, four single beds with its own bathroom and shower room. Definatly backpackers now! Dumped our stuff and went straight out to explore.
Hostel was in Fortitude valley which is on the west of the city, maybe! We walked along the river which is very nice. The southbank area is paticularly nice with mangroves and boardwalks and rainforest walks. Also saw a nice sunset whilst walking over the bridge. The main bridge which was near us, Stony bridge, looks like golden gate bridge. We then walked over another bridge and into the city. Hadn't expected much of Brisbane as had heard bad reports but both think it is a cool place, fully of funky architecture and good designing. The main shopping street also is very cool with canopies and greenery throughout. We walked back to the hostel and had dinner there to save money. Had dinner in the bar which is outside under a big marquee and in front of a cool looking spa and pool. Then we were very sad and watched the big brother final, had to be done! It was on for 3 hours and the whole time we were watching it in the hostel reception/games area! We enjoyed it though.
Tuesday got the bus into the city and on to Lone park koala sanctuary which took 1/2 hour. Had a great few hours here. There of course were a couple of hundred koalas in different areas. We saw some with tiny joeys which were very cute. We saw some with tiny joeys in the pouch. The other highlight of the day was the kangaroos. There were loads in a massive field, all hopping around people. We bought some food and went and fed them which was cool, there were some big bruisers too! Also some had joeys in their pouches sticking their heads out which was very very cool! All the other Oz animals were around, kookaburras, emus, crocs, snakes and lorikeets splashing in bird baths. Had lunch surrounded by loads of koals in trees, could have your photo taken holding them but we are now skin flints! We then got the bus into the city and went to the shops before getting the ferry back down the river towards the hostel. Found that our miserable german had been replaced by two chinese girls who were from Paris. Had a hostel dinner before going and getting the ferry to the city to go to the casino. Saw our first possom on the way, had heard them at Mags but had never seen one! The casino is in my favourite building in Brisbane, the old treasury. At night the white building lights up purple. Inside its still very colonial and cool. Changed up $20 and put a doller in a random pokie (fruitie) thinking might have the same luck my mam did at Star city. Well almost, won $20, put $10 back in. Paul then played blackjack with $50, getting up to $120 and left with $90, not bad free night out!
Got woken up at 0500 by the chinese girls very noisily packing and getting ready to go to airport, not impressed! We got the 0900 hostel courtesy bus to the city, way ahead of time for our 1030 greyhound bus to Noosa. Bus was fine, quite comfy. Loving Noosa but will tell you about that on Friday when we leave, off to Oz zoo tomorrow.
Love and miss you all loads but loving being on our hols!
