We thought we'd try something different for dinner in Berlin and went to the Danke Restaurant - where they have blind waiters and you eat your three course meal in complete darkness!
You are led into the dining room by your waiter, in train holding the shoulders of the person in front. You are expected to pour your wine and water on your own after the waiter leaves the bottles on the table. We managed this quite well! I don't think we spilt a drop... though it's hard to be sure because you never get to see the room lit up.
It was very strange to be in complete darkness, I realised that I'm very rarely in complete darkness. I felt tense with my shoulders tight almost the whole meal! On the other hand, Thomas was completely relaxed enjoying his meal from the first moment! You choose from a few set menus before going into the dark room - we chose the beef menu, but you're not exactly sure what will come because the menu is a bit of a poem. We got most of the dishes correct as we checked the detailed menu afterwards!
It's interesting to see how you react when one of your key senses are taken away. I thought I would be more comfortable, however even after I established some order where I knew where my cutlery, water, wine and bottles were I wasn't completely relaxed. Some people seem to experience their other senses being heightened, not sure this was the case for me maybe it was just a sense of organisation and order that improved for me. In conversation with Thomas we found ourselves needing to speak with more detail, particularly when talking about rights and lefts.
It was definitely a unique experience - and I would recommend it for something different to do!!
