I thought I posted this last night, but I was SO tired I was practically delirious! Apparently it was just saved as a draft which I must have deleted!
We left early Tuesday morning. The kids are such troopers; they rolled out of bed and got to the car and went right back to sleep! I am very thankful that they are such good travelers.
We had a really nice drive through New York and into Pennsylvania! The topography of this area is gorgeous - lots of lush rolling hills! Pennsylvania is a great state that we have enjoyed in this trip and in a trip 4 years ago. It reminds me in so many ways to Kentucky (it is a Commonwealth, its population distribution, the beauty of the land, the friendliness of the people...)!
We were driving through Pennsylvania and saw State College coming up quickly. I could not resist taking a detour to see the Penn State campus. It reminded us so much of Auburn! The kids were convinced that Beaver Stadium was smaller than Auburn's Jordan-Hare Stadium. Upon checking, Jordan-Hare's capacity is 87,45 . Bryant-Denny's seating capacity comes a little closer with 101,821. So, Beaver Stadium reigns over the Tigers and the Tide.
We drove to Mill Run, PA to Fallingwater. It is a home currently owned by the Western PA Conservancy. It was designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. The house was designed for Edgar and Lillian Kaufman. Their son, Edgar Kaufman, Jr. was a 25 year old apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright. The Kaufmans owned a department store in Pittsburgh. They owned 1,500 acres in Mill Run (outside of Pittsburgh). They used this land to provide a camping area for their employees. However, as the Depression began, the employees could no longer come to the Camp at Mill Run. So, the Kaufmans commissioned Frank Lloyd Wright to design a family weekend home. The initial budget was $25,000-$30,000. The ultimate cost (Wright was known for going over budget) was $155,000 ($2.5 million in today's dolllars)!
The house was designed around the cascading waterfall (continuing theme of the trip) of the property. The Kaufmans thought that Wright would design the house so that they could see the waterfall. He designed the house on top of the waterfall so that the family could see, hear and feel the waterfall! The house really incorporated all the nature of the surrounding area. It was an incredible tour! We were unable to take pictures during the tour so the pics are minimal. We loved this tour! It was a bit out of the way - like the Corning Glass Museum; it was so worth the trip!
We next drove into Pittsburgh to get an overview of our next couple of days locations to visit. We checked into our hotel and then went to a local favorite, Primanti Brothers. We were exhausted and fell into bed!
