We drove north from Williamsburg and arrived in Wilmington about lunch time. My kids have seen one too many a billboard on this trip. They both were begging for Arby's on Hawaiian roll. We were on the way to Winterthur and lo and behold there was a sign up for Arby's. I was lackluster but decided to give in - they've been troopers with all the driving. Upon approach, I noticed it was an Arby's with the giant brown hat sign out front. You remember, the kind from the 70s!! Wow! It was something! By the time we got in the parking lot, I could hardly see to drive because I was crying from laughing so hard! Upon exiting the bldg (we were NOT dining there) with the greasy bag, I see a man with a tshirt on that looked like WWJD. I thought, oh how nice and then I see it says WWJHD , and I thought what in the world? Well, it was What Would Jimmy Hendrix Do? Really! I was so finished with the Arbys and the 70s hat sign out front! To make matters worse, I was quite hungry and so I ended up at McDonalds purchasing a filet of fish sandwich. It had been 2 years. I think it was a few too soon!
We got to Winterthur. That is the 175 room country estate of the DuPont family. We learned so much DuPont history as well as a great deal of DuPont family history. A highlight of the the estate was the Enchanted Fairy Garden. The kids loved it. We just finished with that when we had some rain sprinkles.
We went inside for the home tour (not all 175 rooms), a visit to the museum and the bookstore. Winterthur has Campbell's amazing collection of soup tureens. They were on display in Camden, NJ at the Campbell's HQ; however, they were not getting much foot traffic and so they were brought to Wilmington.
From there, I planned to view the Quaker Historic district downtown. There are several unique architectural styles that I thought we could see there. There was a quiet uprising - "THIS IS NOT SAFE!" "Hey! ARE WE IN THE GHETTO?" I have to admit, it didn't look too good - many people wandering in the streets. So, we moved on and headed toward Philly for dinner. Per Eleanor's request, we ate at Pot Belly's. We were glad to get finally reach our destination, Camden, NJ. I think I'll just refrain from comment on NJ. It was the same as I remembered it.
