We started out from New Jersey at 6:30 this morning. It was raining - hard. There was construction - a considerable amount. There was traffic - it grew. All of that to say, we made it safely into New York City. The point of our day in NYC was not to do anything in depth. It was just to give an overview - neither Eleanor or Charlie had ever been there before. I purchased one of those hop on, hop off tours for us. I wondered how it was going to work in the pouring down rain. Lo and behold, by the time we made our first stop, the sun was shining! Hooray!! We covered all the major stops and go lots of history as we went. I think our favorite part was the harbor tour by boat. Lady Liberty is still closed (from Hurricane Sandy). We were just thrilled to get as close to her as we did in our boat.
I did not know that NYC has surpassed Orlando and Las Vegas as the #1 tourist destination with 50 million tourists every year! Wow! It certainly felt more safe and was cleaner than my last visit. We had a great visit and look forward to returning.
I have to say, we found the ultimate parking garage very close to where we met our tour! I was convinced that the van was going to be stripped to the wheels when we got back. I handed over the keys at any rate. When we returned, it took forever to get it. We returned a little earlier than I predicted and apparently that created some difficulty to get it back on the car elevator to bring it down to street level (you cannot imagine how much the kids loved the elevator for cars). When the man brought it down, he could not have been kinder! I couldn't resist (we had been waiting pretty long, and he knew we were out of towners and had been really nice at drop off) - I had to ask him if the delay was because he was out joy riding with the van! He cracked up! I saw some of his regular parked cars - I don't think the van would have been anywhere close to a top 10 choice!
We left and got back on the road. We had a lengthy traffic filled drive (we knew we would) and finally arrived in suburban Providence, RI. The kids were tired from the early morning and busy day, and both slept in the car. I am so thankful for such a great day and for safety and so many blessings. I am also so tired - NJ, NY, CT and RI; I'm ready for bed!
