First, let me say that i am sorry that the 2012 blog is jumbled in with 2013. I'm not sure why that is, and I have not been able to clear that up! I am sorry! The orderly, Type A me absolutely hates that!
A large portion of day was spent driving - trying to move us up the east coast. We left Charleston early this morning. We had a delicious meal in the car (crackers, pretzels, slim jims and pb&j sandwiches), and then we drove about 7 1/2 hours until we reached Kill Devil Hills. We were there to visit the Wright Brothers National Park and Memorial. We arrived and took a look around, we watched the documentary about the Wright Brothers and then ventured outside. We tackled the big hill where the monument is located. My mom was thinking she wasn't going up that big hill, but she did it! It is a giant stone monument. After coming down hill from the monument, we visited the markers denoting the first, second, third and fourth flight distances. We also saw replicas of the hanger the brothers worked in and the small building where they stayed. It got pretty hot so we stopped for some water and then ventured back into the visitor's center for a lecture while seated near a replica of the original plane. It was a great afternoon! The weather could not have been any better. There was a great wind, and we could really see why the Wright Brothers selected the location they did! We stayed until the park closed and finished our visit with the amazing bronze sculpture depicting the first flight.
We left the park and grabbed a quick bite to eat - burgers, some North Carolina bbq and some fish tacos, and we were off and going. We drove north to go through Duck and see the beauty there. Then we headed toward our hotel.
It was an early day and lots of exercise at the park so everyone is pretty tired. Onward north tomorrow.
