Zagreb and Split
We arrived in Zagreb after a fairly pleasant train journey from Ljubljana. From the train station we caught a free tram to our accommodation which was very convenient (the tram is free around the centre of the city). Our hotel of choice was an interesting kitsch little number with mock Greek/Roman decor (it also had lots of mirrors and gold; ‘different’ would best describe it!). Anyway after a sort out we got the tram to the bus station to book ourselves a seat for the next day’s journey to Split as we had decided cities were not the place to be given the temperature. Once that was done we explored the city in the sweltering 38°C heat. We followed a walking tour and took in the sights which were nice but not quite as good as some of the other cities we had visited. After some excellent pizza we headed back to the hotel on the air conditioned free tram which was a bonus!
In the morning we got the tram to the train station and boarded the bus to Split. Once in Split we found our hostel and went to the beach for some respite from the heat. Thankfully a cool sea breeze greeted us and we spent some time dipping in and out of the water. There isn’t much of a beach in Split so we ended up just lying on the side of the harbour where we could find space amongst the huge numbers of holiday makers and locals enjoying the water.
That night we walked around the Diocletian Palace which really is amazing. We had some food and then went back to the room. The next day we sorted out our accommodation and boat tickets for our trip to the islands off Split. For the rest of the day we spent some more time next to the sea and explored more of the palace where we witnessed a rather rowdy Croatian wedding taking place, complete with flares and what sounded like football chants. In the evening we got some food from the supermarket and cooked up a feast of filled pasta with tomato sauce (nothing but the best)!
On Sunday morning we got ourselves down to the harbour and climbed aboard a ferry to the island of Brač and the town of Bol.
