Lake Bled and Ljubljana
Got to Lake Bled on the evening of the 10th July and had some very tasty food at the train station as we waited for a bus to the lake. We checked in to the Astoria Hotel then went to bed. The next morning we got our bearings and had a stroll around the glacial lake which measures 6km in circumference and is situated in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia. The views across the lake were breathtaking and the whole place has a really great atmosphere although it was pretty touristy. Later we found a spot to sit down and went for a swim. That night we had some food in a Mexican restaurant and watched the World Cup Final (the locals were not happy with the Spanish victory, we were less bothered). The next day we moved accommodation before heading up to the castle that overlooks the lake, in the afternoon we had another dip in the lake and then walked up a treacherous track in flip flops (a poor choice of footwear) to a lookout where the views were brilliant and Laura took about 7000 photos. After another swim on the way back we got changed and went for a pizza.
On the morning of the 13th July we boarded a bus to the Slovenian capital Ljubljana. A right mouthful! Again it was absolutely roasting and we were glad to get picked up by the owner of the hostel where we were staying. After getting sorted we got a lift into the centre and had a look around. The city is very compact and has a cool feel to it with plenty of coffee drinking Slovenians chatting in cafes. After a walk around I got a Slovenian haircut which was nice and we had some food along a trendy little street with funky cafes and shops. We walked back in the dark which turned out to be an error as we got a bit lost but were soon greeted by a couple of friendly locals who put us right.
The next day we went up the funicular to the castle (they love a funicular in Europe) had a potter around and got some lunch (a burek and kebab if you're interested). Then we went to the park before going back to the hostel where we cooked some pasta for ourselves. The next day we got an early lift to the train station to catch the 8.15 train to Zagreb, Croatia.
