So I´m now up in the Western Highlands in a city called Quetzaltenango but most people call it Xela (Shay-la). This will be my home for the next month as I start Spanish school here on Monday.
I said my goodbyes to Paul, Chris and Karl and made my way up here yesterday. It seems like an interesting city so far. A good choice for Spanish study I think. It doesn´t have the instant gratification of Antigua but I can tell it´s going to be a grower. There aren´t so many tourists here and the ones that are here speak perfect Spanish and many are involved in voluntary projects in the surrounding area. Everyone speaks English in Antigua and the place is much more set up for tourism. Very nice to visit but I can see that I will learn more here... about the culture as well as the language. I´ve got back on the Couchsufing again to see if I can meet some local people so we´ll see what that brings.
There are some interesting villages in the surrounding highlands which I´m sure I´ll visit during my stay here. Also hot springs and trekking opportunities. The highest accessible point in Central America is a couple of days hike away. Who knows I might limber up and sign myself up for it!
So right now I´m just taking things in and getting used to the idea that I´ll be living here for a month, maybe more. It feels quite exciting!
I´ve updated all my pics and blog entries from Laguna Miramar in Mexico onwards... that´s if you can be bothered to back track on my tales! I quite understand if you can´t! This is the first time in a while that I´ve had some time and a fast cheap internet connection!
Oh, and I´m also much better now. It took a while to get over my nasty amoebic thingy. It really sucked the life out of me. Hopefully I won´t get sick quite that bad again... at least I´m more prepared for what ever tropical nasties I come across now!
Lots of love xx
