Annas and Amazons
hola... estoy sola otra vez! so i'm alone again... i parted ways with my friends in Guatemala City today and I'm now back in Cobán. It's a while back now but I did pass through this town when I first arrived in Guatemala... I was rather grotty with amoebas at that time though so it's nice to be back here fighting fit! It's also nice to back here armed with a better grasp of the spanish language. People here are very friendly and helpful. I'm just here for a night though as it's a stopping off point for visiting Semuc Champey, some rather lovely sounding blue lagoons set in the jungle (relatively) nearby.
So I have to backtrack a little because I'm afraid to say I've given Guatemala City some bad press and I've since decided that I quite like the place... ok so it's stinky and dangerous with an average of something like 10 murders per day... but having spent a little more time there it's grown on me somewhat! Whilst there are sketchy sorts at every turn, friendly, interesting and helpful people are also plentiful... there's an energy about the place that I like and certainly some interesting stuff going on. Last night I stayed in a hotel that reminded me so much of the hotel in Falty Towers that I fell in love with it instantly! Suitably strange as well... when we entered the lobby we were greeted by an overweight sausage dog named Rambo and a rather bemused looking pigeon who promptly scuttled under the reception desk at the sight of us! It was run by a lovely old Guatemalan couple and I was willing the wife with all my might to be a Guatemalan Prunella Scales but alas she was just a tad too dumpy and not nearly nasty enough! So I am not dreading my next encounter with the city... although I still am very mindful that the place needs to be approached with a healthy amount of caution.
So I'll be in the Cobán area for a day or two then I'll be moving back up to Tikal...
until soon xx
