On Saturday, we drove from Jerusalem to the Dead Sea. We saw Bedoun camps and interesting animals on the way. After a short stop to buy Dead Sea products we went to Ein Gedi. There are 3 waterfalls at Ein Gedi. I walked to the first, Steve and some others went to the second. This place is referred to in 1 Samuels 24, in the story about David and Saul.
Next, we stopped at Qumran, the settlement closest to the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. We saw cave #4, as well as some of the remains of the settlement. Cave #4 is the most famous of Qumran caves because it is visible from the settlement and because it is by far the most productive of the caves. Ninety percent of the scrolls were found there.
We had lunch and shopped, then drove down to the Dead Sea. On the way, David announced that, contrary to what we were told at first, we will go to Bethlehem tomorrow. Steve and I both swam, or rather tried to swim, in the Dead Sea.
Before dinner, we walked to the old city. The part we saw is a maze of small shops. The merchants are aggressive. They were selling food products, clothing, leather goods, jewelry, candy, and all kinds of souvenirs.
