In the afternoon we made several stops around the Sea of Galilee. The 1st was at Capernaum, the most important city on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee in New Testament times and the center of much of Jesus’ ministry. Capernaum is not mentioned in the Old Testament. In all likelihood, Capernaum was founded sometime after the Jews returned from captivity.
It had its own synagogue, in which Jesus frequently taught. After being rejected in His hometown, Nazareth, Jesus made Capernaum the center of His ministry in Galilee. He performed many miracles here.
Although Jesus centered His ministry in Capernaum, the people of that city did not follow him. Jesus pronounced a curse on the city for its unbelief (Matt. 11:23–24), predicting its ruin (Luke 10:15).
We also saw Kursi, where demons drove a herd of pigs over a cliff, and Bethsaida, the home of Peter and Andrew. Our last stop was at a museum to see a 2000 year old fishing boat.
