The Zambian roads are terrible!! we went from gravel to pot-holled tar, to sand to more gravel. We went through Mongu the largest town just to get some diesel and heded for a night a senanga. The campsite has a lovely view of the Zambezi although not much else. We started early again to try and cross the boarder early! HUH!!!! Firstly we had to negotiate deep sand tracks and then get a little pontoon across the river. The army were filling up a water tank the other side and just as we got off the found a large bright green snake in the water. They flicked it on to the sand (where I was standing!!!) then hit it over the head with a paddle! apparently they don't much like snakes! We then suffered another 5 hours of horrible sand/gravel roads. We stopped briefly to look a some more waterfalls which are billed as the second best in Zambia aftr vic falls, no really! After another hour of sand we were styopped by a road block! we had to pay the eqivelant of the congestion charge in foreign number plate tax! J.P asked what the money was for and we were told it was road tax! He was not impressed considering the state of the roads! Finally we reached the boarder (we had to cross into Namibia and cut the corner to hit Botswana). Both boarders were really quiet and it was quite easy although we paid road tax in both countries aswell at least the roads are nice. In Botswana you have to go through a antiseptic dip like they had at the races to stop the spread of diseases! They also checked our fridge, you cant bring in any animal products meat or dairy. But they didn't notice the cool bag were we had forgotten about J.P's last cheese, peanut butter and jam sarnie from lunch oopps! (I know it is a disgusting combination! I had cheese and tomato). We are staying in Chobe safari lodge campsite which has lovely hot showers! and guess who we bumped into in the camp when we arrived ... Paul and Zoe whom we had left in S Luangwa!! spooky huh! We had an impromtue brai as they had plenty of steak and drum sticks! and another night of marshmallows on the fire only this time dipped in chocolate (My idea! and very yummy), and the rest of the wild and brandy coffees! We sound like alcoholics but Honestly we have hardly drunk anything the rest of the time and we are on holiday:-) Going for a game drive tomorrow, although the elephants and warthogs have been down the high street today, and we have had lots of monkeys and banded tail mongeese in the camp stealing food again, before heading deeper into chobe park later.
Hi Mum and Dad glad Oz is fun (Please let me explain to the general public that in Australia thongs are flip flops before they all think I have weird parents!) I hope surfing was good, Amy told me you got attacked by parrots Mum; hope all is well xx, I'm sure J.P will comment about the landy you rescued from the river but glad to see you are helping out!
Martin, Yes we are both back for the 26th Oct so will make the house warming.
Tony I still get over excited about all the animals, I'm just easily pleased!
Helen & Steve, good luck, anytime now then ... please let me know the good news asap, oh an J.P did the river driving we were just testing the depth before we crossed in-case it was too deep. I stayed in the passenger seat with my feet up on the dash board (just in case!), But then I was the mug who crossed to take the photos for the second one.
take care all xx
