Our third night in Chobe was spent at Savuti. This is a popular campsite as the game viewing is supposed to be really good.We saw a rock-climbing elephant … I have know idea how he managed to get up the cliff but as the photos show (not so clearly sorry) he was about 20 foot up a shear cliff eating a tree! With about another 50 foot above him to the top!
In the camp we met a group of South African birders! (Apparently they are not called twitchers any more!)They had this great program on a PDA which had all the birds listed and the calls they make.So if you spotted a bird you found it on the program then pressed play and it called then the bird would call back and fly closer to see the other bird (or so it thought!)We had a little owl nesting in the tree above our tent and they were all really interested as it was quite rare and spent a while playing the call sound to make the bird come closer!
We did an early game drive the next morning and found a dead Elle that the vultures etc had obviously been at.There were seven jackals hanging around and then in the distance we spotted a spotted hyena! It was really quite big and allowed us to drive quite close! (My first hyena!)Shame about the Elle but we were told that it was probably old and died naturally (it had been there a few weeks!)Not from an attack. The scavengers just came afterwards to clean up so to speak. We also saw some live Elle; one was doing a great (maybe not!) job of pretending to be a tree.
