L & L Shenanigans
We left South Carolina and headed for Gainesville. We were going to spend the night with Lewis’s aunt Marie and uncle Al. Lewis had not seen either of them since he was a young child, and I had never met them before at all. I was nervous because we were descending on the home of two strangers, and I didn’t know what to expect, or if they would like us. We arrived just before sunset on Friday evening. Uncle Al and Aunt Marie live in a little one story apartment complex. The units have delightful little yards in front of them and some tenants had flowers planted and patio furniture to sit on. I needn’t have worried about imposing on these two; they were perfectly welcoming and such gracious hosts. They invited us in, gave us cool drinks, and comfy chairs to sit on.
It was such a great experience to get to know these two. We learned of how they met (pen pals), some of the places they’ve lived, how they ended up in Florida (it’s where Uncle Al grew up), and Aunt Marie showed us old pictures of her and mama Nancy and Aunt Barb growing up. It was really neat to see pictures of Grandma Nettie when she was young. We also got to see the book the Uncle Al wrote, he is well read on history, Islam, Christianity, and politics. We didn’t have time to read his book, but I hope someday we do.
As the evening wore on, I developed a migraine, and Aunt Marie gave me an ice pack for my eyes, and I took some melatonin, and went to sleep early-ish. We had an early start the next morning to get to church in Fort Lauderdale on time. We said our good-byes, and hit the road.
