L & L Shenanigans
One thing everyone should know about Florida is that there are toll roads, everywhere. You can't escape the toll roads. It was just $2 here and there to start, but then it was $15.50, and then another $2 here and there. But the good news is they’ll take a picture of your license plate and send you a bill later for some of them. We arrived at church (late, like we always keep doing), and heard an excellent sermon by Chuck Smith about the sovereignty of God. I really recommend it (http://ft-lauderdale.ucg.org/sermon/do -you-embrace-sovereignty-god). There is something everyone should know about the United Church of God congregation in Ft. Lauderdale, FL: they are extraordinarily warm and welcoming and have delicious snacks (I guess that's technically two things)!
We had made plans in advance to have dinner with Chuck and Mary Smith. I had met Mary briefly in the past, and similarly with Chuck, so this was an awesome opportunity to get to know them. They fed us delicious food, and welcomed us (and Lola) warmly. We had anticipated spending a pleasant evening with the Smith's and then heading to Andy and Willa Diemer's winter home just north of where we were, but the conversation and company was so good, that we stayed pretty late, and the Smith's generously offered to let us stay the night with them. We were appreciative of their hospitality, and so enjoyed our time in their company that we accepted.
Our plan was to leave around 9:30am or 10:00 the next morning to drive to Key West, neither Lewis or I had ever been to the Keys and we were looking forward to exploring a new area. I was a bit concerned about the trip because extended walking is not my friend since being on crutches, but we were determined to still enjoy as much as we could. However, sunny Florida was not very sunny when we awoke the that morning, in fact it was downright gray and rainy. e had a leisurely morning with the Smith's and before we knew it, it was already noon, the rain was still coming down, and we were no nearer to leaving than we had been. We decided, people over places should be our mantra; and we stayed with the Smith's until dinner time. We had a delicious Florida meal of freshly made potato chips and lightly battered fish and beans and rice. We were sad to bid our new friends farewell, but we set out to the Diemer's home in the early evening hours.
We arrived at the adorable home of Andy and Willa in the early evening hours. We met their lovely daughter and settled in for a very restful evening. We had an early start in the morning, and we were determined to drive through Alligator Alley on our way to our next stop. Disappointingly there wasn't a single alligator sighting the entire trip. I was more than a little disappointed.
P.S. I think Lola was most spoiled on this particular stop, Chuck and Mary were so sweet to accommodate our little pup.
