Today we headed out into the heat of bangkok, to do a bit of sight-seeing, and at the firm assurance of our hostel we were told to use the water-taxis used solely by the locals to navigate the backstreet waterways into the centre of the city. Quite the experience as the language barrier proved to be quite a problem and the walk there underneath a motorway, which was where some vagabonds and stray dogs had decided to call home, didn't do much to settle our nerves! We alighted and experienced our first ride in a tuk-tuk, a cross between a bike and a car, and were glad to escape with only minor shock. we visted the Wat Arun and Wat Pho which are two of the major temples in Thailand and home to the reclining buddha, a massive gold statue, 45m long and17m long.
The next stop was the famous backpacker haunt of Koh San Road, and experienced our first encounter with the infamous ladyboys! Was a very commercial area, complete with Burger King and Boots and reminded us all a bit of blackpool really! yet there were some bargains to be had and itproved to be the perfect place to hone our bartering skills and we managed to secure 4 t-shirts for 8pounds. We met with a girl from our hostel and headed out into the bars on Koh San Road or the more common stalls in the street for the traditional "thai bucket"- a mixture of whisky, vodka, coke and lemonade in a bucket. After the bar seemingly shutting up shop, due to an impending arrival from the police we followed the recommendation of some Australian guys we had met, and headed to the Roof. A bar specialising in live music (mainly the Beatles!) and lots of backpackers from around the world were there in full force. With the cocktails, conversation and more importantly, the dance moves flowing a great night was had by all.
