So we have finally arrived in Bangkok, after what has seemed like a decade of planning and preparation. Well it certainly is a unique typeof place. After squeezing 4 rucksacks, 4 handbags and 5 sweaty bodies into the back of our taxi we headed off for our hostel "refill now" in an area called Sukhumvit. After a somewhat anxious journey through shanty towns with numerous open backed trucks passing us by filled with masked men in balaclavas, we arrived at quite a diamond in the rough! our hostel, much to our relief, was clean and modern and the staff could not be more helpful, so we decided to head ut into Sukhumvit for dinner that evening and went to a nice place called Cabbages and Condoms! Completely original decor there, as all furnishings and the outfits of the various mannequins were made entirley from condoms and contraceptive pills. Much to my delight there was even a christmas tree and santa claus made from condoms too! the reason behind all this though was that 15% of the bill goes towards projects aimed at raising awareness of sexually tranmitted diseases and HIV in thailand. The food and cocktails were delicious and came to only around 10 pounds each! After this we decided to sample some authentic thai entertainment and headed to Cheap Charlies- a bar/ shack nestled down a side street in the car park of an office building!! With beers for only 50p each we thought we may have been wearing beer goggles when an elephant and its baby proceeded into the already limited space!really had to be seen to be believed!!With the jetlag beginning to set in we all headed home through some ridiculouly heavy traffic back to our hostel for a restful nights sleep.
