Day 54 Sydney
Our last full day in Sydney and as we missed a day of sightseeing yesterday we have a lot to do today. Had a bit of lie in this morning though after the very early start yesterday and consequently missed the ferry to Taronga Zoo by about thirty seconds. The ferries are really anal about their time keeping and although there were only five of us trying to catch it they closed the doors and we had to wait for the next one which has put us behind, damn it. It wouldn't normally matter but we have to be back early to get ready for the Opera.
So morning at the Zoo; we wouldn't haven't have gone to the zoo but here it gives us an opportunity to see species from the Southern Hemisphere that we are unlikely to see in the wild or in captivity in Europe. I'm really glad we did as we saw Fjordland penguins and Little Blue penguins that we missed in New Zealand, many rare species of birds, snow leopard, koala, different species of wallaby and kangaroo and many others. We also managed to turn the corner and saw two giant tortoises mating, not something you see every day! Had a lovely leisurely but rather late lunch at Cockle Bay in Darling Harbour and then made our way back to the hotel to change and get ready. Walked round Circular Quay and stopped off at the Opera Bar for some champagne before making our way to the Opera House for a performance of Carmen.
We had managed to get seats and although they were at the back of the stalls the seating was well raked and we could see well although not read the subtitles as it was performed in French, typical. I also managed to get the obligatory large male in front of me who fidgeted throughout as I think his companion was in the row in front of him. Performance was very good though with a cast drawn from all over the world by all accounts. Not something we would normally go to as Musical Theatre is more our thing but we wanted to go to a performance in the Opera House and we were a little limited in our choice because of availability of seating and what was on.
In going to this though we missed the Saturday night fireworks at Darling Harbour and the Mardi Gras but you can't do everything……..
