Day 52 - Sydney
What a difference a day makes or so the song says - today in spite of forecasts to the contrary the day is sunny with a few high clouds, perfect for the beach. We had decided that unless it was absolutely horrid that we would do Manly and Bondi Beaches today. Not great to have to fit both in one day but no option really if we are to fit in all the things we want to do.
Caught the "famous" Manly ferry just after breakfast; while we were waiting we watched the Saga Ruby dock. It was quite emotional as there were families there obviously meeting parents & grandparents who had sailed half way round the world to meet family; a bit of hint of a bygone age when passengers on liners were met at the dockside. It was a fantastic trip over on the ferry with iconic views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge; the stuff postcards are made of. A short walk down the "The Corso" (pedestrian precinct to you and I) and we were on the beach. Golden sands and rolling surf - wonderful; I can see why it is so popular. We stayed there till lunchtime; I could have stayed longer but we needed to get back to Circular Quay to get the bus to Bondi. As luck would have it a bus pulled up just as we got to the stop so on we hopped and settled down for the 35 min journey to the other iconic Sydney beach. I'm not sure what I was expecting of Bondi Beach but it certainly came upto expectations when it came to the quality of the sand - soft, fine and golden, bit like Weymouth and about the length of Weymouth but wider and a decent surf for the hundreds of people on the beach who were taking advantage of it. Wonderfully clear water too, not what you normally associate with a sandy beach. The bus back was understandably crowded but in no time we were back at Circular Quay and our hotel. Were hoping to meet some friends tonight but unfortunately they are not well so cancelled so dinner on our own again. Planning to go back to Manly to eat and hopefully post these blogs on the ferry. Off tomorrow early on the train to Kiama where Lynda and Geoff are meeting us………….
