We're in Phi Phi now! We arrived on Monday - its a really cute little island but you can see how the Tsunami affected it. The beach we're staying on is the one that was hit the hardest - there is still loads of rubble and lots of rebuilding work is going on. That said everyone here seems to be getting on with it and making the most of the tourists that still come here!! There is a memorial garden for the people killed here, its really scary to think that they were people just like us, it says in the guide book that it could happen again at anytime which is a bit worrying!!
The weather is good, its been hot hot hot - it does however have tropical rain everyday about 4ish!! you literally are soaked in about 2 seconds!! The accommodation is a bit skanky though!! The first night here we stayed in a tiny little room for 300bht (4 pounds) but you literally stood off the bed and out of the front door, we upgraded ourselves last night, treated ourselves to a bigger room for 400bht - it is however right outside a restaurant and is full of damp. So you can imagine the lovely smells we get in there!!!
Last night we saw our first thai boxing match - it took place in a reggae bar of all places??!! Before the match they invite anyone to come up and fight in the ring for two free buckets of alcohol. Was entertaining to see the English drunks kicking the s##t out of each other!! Looked quite scary and Dave wasn't really up for a fight!! Haha. Eventually the Thai boxing actually started was really good - they do some dance thing before hand, bowing to everyone then just start beating each other up!! They can do anything they want including elbowing and headbutting!! The guy was out after about three rounds with a flying roundhouse to the face (dave's words not mine??), he was knocked out cold!!
Today we went for our 2nd thai massage, there are literally hundreds of massage parlours crying out for business. But we decided we'd go to a quieter one, having found one down a backstreet. The funniest thing was there are so many thai women crying out to give you a massage, so we lie down and a guy and a girl come in. The guy goes to Dave and his face wasa picture (Thai massages get pretty close to you!!), so it starts with the guy massaging up Dave's legs and he's getting more and more uncomfortable. Then the bloke stops and says he has to go to the loo (he was really sweating and didn't look well) it went on for a bit longer but the guy really wasn't well so a woman had to finish Dave off!! He wasn't amazingly impressed with that either as she was possibly the only fat thai lady we'd seen whilst in Thailand!!
This afternoon we went on a Sunset boat trip to Phi Phi Ley - which is the smaller island off Phi Phi. Its uninhabitated and is owned by a national park. We stopped on the way at Viking Island where there are monkeys all over the beach - they were soooooo cute!! (and you didn't have to pay 200bt for the picture) Dave hand fed one, I want a monkey as a pet!! After that they dropped us at another cove for snorkeling, which i was absolutely useless at (funny thing is we were considering doing a PADI scuba diving course, obv not now as i can't even snorkell!!) There were thousands of tropical fish swimming below the boat. Dave really enjoyed it as he snorkelled out futher to the caves and around the coral reef, where there were bigger fish. The final bit of the trip took us to Maya bay where the film 'The Beach' was filmed, to be honest it wasn't as breathtaking as we expected it to be - i think this is because the weather was overcast. There was still long white beaches and clear blue sea - its easy to see why they chose that location - we'll upload piccies once we've burnt them to CD. They then took us back to Phi Phi, where the sunset (well almost behind the clouds).
Tomorrow we are off to Koh Lanta, which is the last island we'll be visiting in Thailand - on Saturday we're taking a train to Penang in Maylasia. Hopefully we'll get across the boarder!! It also means we have to use different money, and i've only just got the hang of this money!! Then next Sunday we're off to Oz!!
