Hey All,
We've just arrived in Noosa, but for the past couple of days we've been staying in Hervey Bay, which is where you go to Fraser Island from.
On the way down from Whitsundays we stopped over in Yepoon for the night, which was similar to Southend! (Obv except for the weather) we spent the night in a car park!! Wasn't actually too bad except for the 6am wake up call by a guy cutting the grass. Still didn't have to pay so all good. We went to a place called Capricorn caves which are in Rockhampton - they were quite funny - Dave climbed into one of the caves and nearly couldn't get out!! They showed us a cave which has been turned into a Cathedral with all the pews and everything, they then turned all the lights off so we could experience 'total darkness' it was weeeeelll scary your eyes didn't adjust no matter how much you stared at the dark!!
When we got to Hervey Bay the weather wasn't all that, but we found a nice campsite and had a shower!!(much needed after the night in car park and caves!!). We booked our trip over to Fraser Island - we decided to do 2 days and 1 night. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world - 125km in length!! You have to go in 4 wheel drive vehicles to get anywhere on the island because of the sand, we had a 4 x 4 coach! It was big and the ride was bumpy!!! Fun though! The first place we went was Pile Valley - which is basically a huge tropical rainforest which has grown in the sand, it is full of spiders and snakes!!!!! I wasn't too thrilled to be doing it especially as they'd had a storm the day before and lots of the track had been blocked by fallen trees and we were wearing flip flops. The walk took about 45 minutes and i didn't see anything dodgy thank god! It was a beautiful rainforest and it was lovely and cool under the trees (which the tour guide loved!! We learnt an awful lot of useless info about trees whilst in Fraser Island - one thing that was pretty cool was that the logs from the trees have been used to build Tilbury Docks!!). After the walk we went to the resort to have lunch, it was a big buffet and seeing as we've been living off camping food for the past couple of weeks we made the most of it!! In the afternoon we set off for Lake Wabby, to get there you literally have to walk through massive hill of sand. At one point all you can see in any direction in mounds of sand - it was like walking through a dessert!! Finally after what seemed like hours we arrived at this huge lake- it was green!! (called Emerald Green by the brochure!) Didn't look that appealing but we just made a run for it and jumped in at the bottom!! There were loads of fish swimming around and even a few turtles. Was a nice afternoon sun bathing and swimming (its a hard life being a traveller!!) That eve we all had a few drinks in the bar!!
Next morning we were up early (6.15am!!) and set off for Indian head, this is the birthplace of Fraser Island and you are supposed to see Sharks, Dolphins, Whales and Manta Rays from this point. Unfortuantly there had been loads of sea weed washed up from the storm so we didn't see anything but got some good piccies. To get there you have to go up the highway its 75 miles long and is obviously made of sand, however you don't expect it to be the beach!! Crazy, all the road rules apply but you just have to watch out for the waves and there are no road markings!! We also went past the Maheno shipwreck, coloured sands and walked up Eli Creek. After another BIG lunch we went to Lake McKenzie, this is high up in the mountains and took another very bumpy ride up but it was worth it, it was a huge freshwater lake and was completly clear and it had white sand (just like whitehaven but not as squeaky). It was a really good trip and well worth visiting.
So we're here in Noosa now which seems to be a really cool little town, its where all the rich aussies come so there are loads of yachts moored up and some really swish apartments (obv nothing compared to our van!! ). We're staying tonight then heading down the coast tomorrow going to go to Steve Irwins zoo on Monday so looking forward to that - we have seen a few aussie animals since we've been here. We saw wild Kangeroos outside the Capricorn caves and a few Dingos and a Wallaby whilst on Fraser Island.
Oh yeah and last thing i had a girl come up and ask me where she could get drugs this morning!! Must be something to do with the van!! Made us giggle though!!
Hope your all well, only 5 weeks till we're home now!! Not happy bout that!!
Loads of love
Lou & Dave xxxx
