Well we've finally made it to Airlie Beach, which is how we get to the Whitsunday Islands. It took us two and a half days to get here in our van, 14 hours worth of driving along one highway! It was loooooooooooooooooong!! And we're travelling in the most commical van ever, we look like we're doing a drug run up the east coast!! The van has got Cocaine written up the sides of it in the style of Coca Cola and on the back it says "Cocaine is gods way of sayin you've got to much money!!" Its hillarious!! Everyone stares at us whereever we go, we're thinking of selling the stuff to make some money! haha. Apart from that the inside isn't too bad, we've got a little kitchen at the back (gas burner and a sink) and it converts from table to bed at night - reminds me of the van in Sccoby Doo! We've even got a TV (portable black and white that doesn't work, we're living the dream! haha).
The drive up here was eventful to say the least, we'd been on the highway for about an hour and it started to get really windy, then the sky goes black and the heavens open, there is fork lightning literally next to us, rain pelting down so hard its coming through the roof of the van! Then just when we thought we were through the worst the biggest hail stones we've ever seen start falling down on us, we thought they were going to break the windscreen. We had to pull over on the highway and wait for it to settle! It was a joke, no one could move people were just pulling over on the highway and waiting for it to clear. After the stresses of the storm we decided to call it a day and find a campsite before it got dark (your not allowed to drive on the highway after six as there are too many kangeroo's), what we needed more urgently was some alcohol, but none of the supermarkets sell it. You have to go to a liquor shop, which are drive throughs! its well cool - you order your booze and they bring it to your car (drug van)! So off we went to the first campsite to have a well deserved rest and bottle of wine!!
Next morning we set out early to get some miles under our belt before breakfast, this day was pretty uneventful just a very long drive up the highway and 550 kms later we slept on the side of the highway in a rest area, Dave being tight and saying we can't pay for a campsite. It would have been fine was it not for the massive hairy spider that was staring at me while i sat on the loo! We were lucky there was a bar there so we sat in there for the eve, after cooking our dinner on our gas stove!! The bar man was kind enough to let us have a shower in his bar -this was again full of spiders!!
Last day on the road and we finally made it to Airlie beach, after travelling for a stretch of 600kms with absolutely nothing, no petrol stations, shops or anything!! Just trees and fields galore!! Still, by about lunch time we'd arrived and settled ourselves into a campsite (our budget allowed!!) its quite luxurious compared to the rest area, we have showers, swimming pool and TV room!! Last night we just stayed around camp and cooked our dinner - steak on the BBQ!! And had a few drinks to celebrate our arrival (we were both in bed by ten!! )
Airlie beach is a really cute little town, we've booked to do the Whitsundays tomorrow which are meant to be fantastic! We're sailing to Whitehaven beach then snorkelling around some other islands. There was an option to dive but i wasn't too keen, think Dave may as he is now PADI certified!! hmm i'm not bitter!
We love Australia and are seriously considering getting our work visas next year, or maybe we'll just stay a bit longer!! We're going to see if we can get some fruit picking jobs to get a bit of extra cash as it is more expensive than we thought. Its so nice for it to be November and we're sitting on the beach - we've bought ourselves a Xmas CD so we can get in the mood but it doesn't feel right in 90 degrees heat!! So thats all for us at the mo, we're driving back down to Fraser Island in a few days then going to do the Gold Coast and ending up in Sydney. (Lots of driving for Dave but he loves it! haha)
Will update after we've done Whitsundays with hopefully some more pictures.
Hope your all well,
Love Lou & Dave xxx
