Ecuador 2006
Last night we stayed at the Hola Vida cabins after taking a short hike in the surrounding jungle and a swim under the Hola Vida Waterfall. The cabins were very rustic, a lumpy mattress over a wooden bed frame and a mosquitto net over the top. The roof was made of plant material and sometimes leaked when it rained (when it rains in the jungle it really rains!) We went with a guide from Puyo who stayed in a nearby cabin. In the middle of the night 2 roaming men came into camp and talked (loudly) during most of the night. At one point I almost fell asleep and then one of them started to sing... sounding something like a native american indian chant. hahahahah! It was a restless night but we laughed about it this morning. Still nobody knows who the men were or what they may have been doing. They talked, sang, and used the bathroom under our house however.
This morning we went on a ride down the Puyo River in wooden dug out canoes. The water was pretty shallow in the rapid areas so we would get bumped against big rocks sometimes. At one point both of the men steering the boat fell out into the water, leaving Kelly and I inside the canoe. Luckily they were both okay and we laughed for a long time about the whole incident.
We actually arrived in Puyo 2 days ago. Our first night, and every night we are in town, we stay at a hostel called El Collibri. This is operated by an Italian guy -- his pizza and spaghetti is the best! I highly recommend his restaurant ¨O Sole Mio¨. Its a nice change from chicken and rice or Ecuadorian pizza which is basically bread with way to much cheese.
I dont know what tomorrow will bring. I look forward to taking a shower and eating some of Sergios pizza tonite.
Until next time,
Kimmy
