Day 2 of 2 on Spiritual Variant. I left the monastery this morning and headed west to the sea. Most of the day followed the river, which was beautiful and peaceful. There were a lot of old stone mills that were still standing all along the river.
It was a longer walk today, and we got a late start, so got full on afternoon sun/heat. Martin and Tanja went ahead and Rolf, Isabelle and I took our time with a lot of stops in the shade. The blister on the right heel (caused by the heel pads) apparently made me walk funny on my left foot, and I have 2 on my left foot today. The heat did not help them at all. Hoping I can keep them intact, but not sure... I removed the heel pads this morning in hopes it will get better by tomorrow (and hope the bone pain doesn´t return). Yeesh.
We met at the albergue, which was basically a gym/YMCA in the middle of town - nothing like last night's experience. We headed out for dinner. The closest place was pizza, and we were all too tired to go any further. Pizza it is! A few of the group ordered tuna pizza - tuna pizza?? Come on, I consider myself well versed in the area of pizza, and I've never heard of a tuna pizza. I tried a piece. It was awesome. Kinda like a tuna melt or tuna casserole. Must try to make one when I get home.
The place we ate was packed for the big futball (soccer) match - there are apparently 2 teams in Madrid, and they were playing each other (kind of like the Chicago baseball's crosstown classic??). It was great to see the passion they all had for their teams. Athletico won ("working man's team" I was told), and there was a big celebration.
Early to bed as early boat launch tomorrow to Padron.
