The day after the hike we gave ourselves some recovery time by visiting a nearby village called Lofthus. They were having their "sweet cherry festival". Once a year, Lofthus has a festival to honor the fact they are the biggest producers of cherries and plums in Norway. We tried 5 different kinds of cherries and ranked how we thought they tasted, looked and their level of firmness. We drank some locally produced beer and ate food of wild caught whitefish from the mountains and pork for lunch. We sat by 2 other couples who happened to be teachers in a nearby town, and swapped stories and facts about working in the school systems and living in Norway.
During the festival, they also have a "cherry pit spitting" contest. This is where you can enter to spit a cherry pit and hopefully spit it far enough to be the winner. Last years winner spit it over 8 meters, and the record held is 14 meters. They also had a section where little kids could spit theirs too, which was super cute to see.
At the end of the festival, we took a local fjord cruise and saw many other villages from the fjords and dined on Norwegian waffles and jam. We had to hurry to catch our bus, otherwise we wouldn't have had a way back. The buses aren't too frequent in these smaller areas, so we had to be careful and really watch the schedule.
