We arrived in Bergen via express boat where Jason's cousin Cari picked us up from the harbor. Cari has lived just outside of Bergen for over 20 years so we were looking forward to spending some time with her and explore the city a bit. That night they grilled and we tried a new dessert that looked like whipped cream but was actually a cheese, and served over fruit.
The next morning we went into Bergen and Inge, Cari's husband, also came with. They showed us the seafood market where you could buy fresh lobsters, crab, fish etc. I tried various kinds of sausage including whale, moose and elk.
We visited the "crooked houses" which are some of the oldest buildings in Bergen which were built right on seaside. After they were built they quickly grew crooked because of the uneven and soft landscape near the sea. Right now they are filled with fun shops with hats, sweaters and Christmas decorations that are all original of Norway design.
We then decided to hike up the most visited mountain of Bergen (out of 7) to the top called Floyen. Inge said it would only take us 30 minutes but it actually ended up being more like an hour! It's ok though, because we got some great pictures and had coffee and ice cream at the top. Inge and Cari also told us a lot about the city and the mountain, which was alike a nice "tour" for free! We took the rail car back down the mountain which provided us with views of the city.
That evening we took Inge's boat to a restaurant called Cornelious, that was only accessible by water. It is a seafood restaurant that has a changing menu everyday depending on what the owner catches that morning. We were served mussels, white fish and a strawberry dessert. It was delicious and a great way to cap off our night in Bergen.
