Today was our first day in Odda, where we decided to hike the 8-10 hour trek to Trolltunga. This famous hike takes you up mountains, across rivers and over snow to see a landmark that is known countrywide. The landmark is known for looking like a "trolls tongue", hence the name Trolltunga. We were told upon our arrival that it was supposed to be a good weather day, with very little rain so we decided to do the hike our very first day here.
The hike to Trolltunga is 11 km there, and then another 11 km back to where you started. The first kilometer was the hardest, with basically a straight shot up the mountain. We ran into a group of men from Belgium, who we saw quite a few times along the hike.
After the second km, you get into more snow and start to lose the tree line. It was quite chilly up on the mountain, and after a couple of hours we stopped to have some meat and cheese we had bought earlier in Tyssedale. We definitely could have used some good, waterproof hiking boots but our trail shoes did the trick.
There were many families who were hiking with small children, carrying their own packs and doing an over night trip. They were such little troopers!
About 4.5 hours later, we made it to the tongue. We snapped a couple of pictures and pretty much turned around right away because it was so cold, and we had to go all the way back. Where there wasn't snow, there was mud. I slipped and fell 4 times during the hike. On the way back I was able to get some amazing pictures of the lake, mountains, snow, and us going back. I am not gonna lie, there were many ups and downs in that 8 hours which made it a difficult trek. But it was worth it.
We had dinner that night at our hotel, where I felt like my face was going to fall right into my plate of food because I was so tired. Luckily we slept in the next day and took it easy to allow ourselves some recovery time.
